Yes, I understand you want your chapters to end up thousands of words long in the final copy. But for your first draft? Just get the basic plot done. Save the finer details for later.

I don't know. I think you have to find the process that works best for you. I do the exact opposite of a sparse plot point first draft. I write long repetitive meandering first drafts that still need a ton of work, but it's usually cutting a lot of unnecessary stuff rather than adding details. But I get excited about trying to convey everything I'm thinking for my characters or scenes and so I try to get it all down. I wouldn't enjoy things as much if I just had to go through and write only the major plot points.
