Could someone explain to a noob why the known universe is a cylinder (that even contains right angles) and why the centrepoint of the cylinder was picked to be where it is? (Is that where earth is?)

It's a map of the area and is not the whole universe. A cylinder is a reasonable way to depict the local area and putting our main reference point in the middle makes sense.

Why don't they use a sphere and use a spherical coordinate system? (angle, angle, distance)
