It kind o# used to mean corner (as in nook), but no one uses theterm like that anymore. That's why I wrote my first comment: I forgot that it's an old term for nook.

It highly depends on where in Germany. The rural areas still use similar terms.

¯_(ツ)_/¯ in this case you know that there's more than one rural area in Germany. And at least in the south nearly each village has their own language ("Baureslang").

Winkel is not new to me but the related word "Eck'" is way more common in my area.
