not sure about the "roman hug",

Lots of the far right saying he was giving a "roman salute". All of it is the defenses for Musk applied to Luigi Mangione.

Ah, see I'd seen that, but (before I realised the musk salute connection) I thought a roman hug was a reference to its own thing (like maybe getting stabbed in the back?), rather than just a tongue in cheek reference to the roman salute.

I didn't see anybody claiming that, and I don't get why that would be a defense. A roman salute is a fascist symbol that - at least in Italy - is considered identical to the nazi one. They are basically synonyms, so much so that Italian articles reporting on this fact used the term "roman salute" to describe Musk's gesture.
