HDMI was somewhat straightforward until 2.1 or so.

Uhh how can you tell? Whats a 1.4 cable look like vs a 2.0 cable?

I thought you meant overall version complexity. Yes, you can't tell the difference between 1.4 and 2.0. But this was easier to manage than the different USB versions.
