and when people do take that day off, they're more inclined to be "sick" some extra days in order to make it worth one's while, when someone has wasted that day without pay already.

Yeah there are days when you catch some cold that puts you off for a day, but you're back on your feet one-two days later if you rest.

I'd take a week off to be sure in this case.

The article says that Germans took 15 sick days on average in 2023.
