Fediverse vs Disinformation

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

And how many people do you think uses either on a daily basis

Wikipedia is the 7# most visited website in the world

Archive.org is like #200

that’s a good point, bandwidth is pretty expensive and wikipedia probably serves mondobytes more than archive.org, per whatever time unit.
my guess is they’re still better funded and archive.org actually needs more money… also that musk talking shit about wikipedia is just going to drive up donations… the overlap between musk haters and wikipedia donors is probably pretty big…. especially compared to musk loafer lickers and wikipedia donors.
….
i still think the internet archive is more crucial to democracy and human freedom because without it we get closer to a 1984 memory hole where old stories that don’t make certain institutions look good are burned away.
a lot of times what people change in public is very telling of what they want to keep secret….
accountability and such….
but if i were going to donate to two charities it would be both of them, probably about equally.
