Mabuhay at maligayang pag-alis sa Lemmy! ✈️

An abandoned community for the Philippines and all things Filipino! 🇵🇭

Started out as a Reddit alternative during the blackout from Jun 12-21, 2023 with over 1k members in just a few days. Fizzled faster than the "I Didn't Do It" kid after a month until it became the internet's Centralia in less than a year.

I recently setting up my family's smartphones and their home PC with Firefox Browser and uBlock Origin and NewPipe (Android). Plus, we've been on Spotify since 2015, and that time hindi pa namin alam na may Family plan. We have similar DNS settings, except mine allows pornographic websites lol.

I did this because I don't want my family "hooked" on their YT algorithm with their personalized content. NewPipe is a bliss, and doesn't track nor exploit users, unlike proprietary YouTube app.

Yeah, I used to try to setup everything for my family. To the point where I setup a flavor of Linux as the primary OS in the family desktop with all the non-proprietary alternative applications.

There came a point where I figured I was taking on too much responsibility. And in a way I think I just liked learning to do this stuff before.

Now, aside from security-related things like recommending password managers, MFA, and the occasional anti-scam PSA, I just let them be.

In the end, I just found not having to manage this small thing of music streaming and ad-free YT pretty worth it at the cost of 40PHP per month per person.

You don't need to be too personal. It's up to user/s how they change their online habits. We are only giving them tools.

Same, same, brada.

Ironically, I've subscribed to Google Drive's 100 GB and I'm not using it personally. Instead, I'm sharing it to my family. lol
