It annoys me on toasters like this that you can't activate just one side. If you want to toast a single slice then you still have to have all the elements on instead of just the ones where the bread is.
There's also a bagel setting in America that only turns one side on of each slot so you only toast one side of the slice. It's great for rolls, burger buns etc.
The toaster gods have deemed us unworthy of this though.
