If we can get all the fossil fuel vehicles off our roads, out of our seas and out of our skies, we'll have a much better environment. It's mostly poorly written legislation and Americans wanting bigger and bigger cars. CAFE, or corporate average fuel efficiency, is the main culprit. It's in dire need of an overhaul. I'm hoping we'll get a small electric pickup someday.
As for safety you might be thinking of kei trucks which are gaining popularity in the US, but aren't registerable in most states due to safety regulations.
