I know I tuned out of Alan Wake 1 really early thinking it was going to be a boring 'look around with a flashlight game'. I was very surprised by how fun and intricate the combat eventually got when I went back and actually played it through.
Tap for spoiler
I was certainly not expecting it to turn into a destruction derby / vehicular combat game halfway through. And on the writing side, I didn't realize just how funny and tongue in cheek it all is. I think Alan Wake is always a bit of a hard sell because Remedy wants to gradually build and surprise you with new things, and all their humour is super deadpan and satirical of this hard boiled story, which can combine to make it seem kind of boring at a surface / marketing level until you get into the game and realize what's happening and how much fun they're having with it.
