Id argue they provide a catalyst - renting to those who can't afford to buy yet, but allowing them to still have a place to live. They are needed - no one is going to buy straight out of high school or Uni.
Hes there thing though. They make soo much doing it that 1, people can't afford to live due to high rent and 2, they have pushed the housing market beyond the reach of those who want to buy.
They can't afford to buy because they're paying rent. They're eating off the plate of the working class, which is good because it upholds capitalism.
