Smartphones is what killed the internet, giving everyone easy access was a bad fucking idea.
If you don't know what Eternal September is, you are part of the problem.
It's easy enough to create isolated communities within the Web that replicate the Pre-Eternal September state. The problem is that nobody really wants that in practice.
Networking Effect means systems gain value with more (real) users. For the same reason you wouldn't want a phone that could only call 1/1000th of the numbers in the phone book, you don't really want an Internet that's exclusive to a tiny fraction of computer users.
What the Internet needs isn't a total participant cap but an invite-only / limited reach condition within a given network. I don't ever want to receive a phone call from someone more than two degrees outside my social network. But I do want everyone inside that range to have phone access.
Our problem is that the optional individual solution is not the optional profit driven solution.
No sorry, that won't work and we already have that with discord.
Profit doesn't even need to be a factor.
So tired of people like you, welcome to my blocklist
