I also think this is one of the best 12th Doctor moments, allthough I'm not sure it's the one that defines him for me...

Maybe earlier in the season where he's able to share a joke with Davros a moment before spoiling his plans, whilst then telling Missy to go before he gets really angry.

I mean I was tempted to go with the moment in Into The Dalek where he offers hope to the crew member just to say "he was dead anyway - I was saving our lives, come on!"

But he did soften later. That's definitely the early statement of intent that 'you're officially not watching 11 anymore' though imo

I think 12 worked a lot better later when he was a bit less callous. I feel like they really perfected his character in s9 and 10

Absolutely my take. My son wants to watch all of 12 and it reminded me why I've avoided season 8 for so long - very uneven in quality and characterisation. Season 9 is when it really clicked. S9 is possibly my favourite season of new Who. 10, 4 and 5 are pretty close.

Although tbf I forgot how entertaining some of s8 was - Time Heist, Robot Of Sherwood and Mummy on the Orient Express are all great watches.

Children are great at giving brutal judgements though - that was great, I liked most of it, the ending was rubbish but most of it was fun so it was good etc. It's interesting rewatching old and new Who with children... The Evil Of The Daleks animation lost points for not having the emperor come in sooner. I could get behind that argument
