Amazon hoped the unit would one day generate a profit by users spending more money somehow, or perhaps from magical unicorns.

Well now Amazon is gonna have thousands of people wondering why they still have Prime and Music subscriptions when this is pushed on them, and they can just control their switches and plugs with the manufacturer's standalone apps. You played yourselves. May as well leave the moat and save 40 bucks a month
