Why is his spear so thick? Is it so that it can block a sword?

It is called a Goedendag, meaning good day. It is a thick stick with a metal end on it. More or less a good clubbing weapon IIRC. Yeah, clubbing was a different thing back then.

That's a Flemish Goedendag ('Good Day')! It's spiky to threaten horses with, and then has the metal nub and the thick wood so it can be used like a mace to bludgeon whoever was on the horse!
