I noticed it as a kid too and figured it must be because I only pick my nose with my fingers. Boogers grow nails.

I only noticed in my 20s when I stopped biting my nails. I never realized how much I was biting and assumed the amount I bit off was equal to the amount I cut off my toe nails.

I thought it was because friction with socks wore down the toenails

steel wool socks keep the toenails in check
