Seems more to mean "Slow down and learn, don't jump in headlong" to me. Everyone starts out unwise, it's up to us to slow down enough that the wisdom can catch up, but not so slow that it passes us by.

That's my interpretation, anyway, and I added the bit about going too slow as it is very possible to stagnate.
