My old person trait is that I think 'ghosting' is completely unacceptable and you owe the other person a face-to-face conversation.

Oh nonono, I bought the Citroen C4 used as well. The Toyota lasted 4 years. It was a while after I was able to purchase my second car, which broke down in a year.
