The Sahrawi Mission to the African Union and Embassy to Ethiopia launched a new website in English, marking a significant step in providing comprehensive updates on the Western Sahara issue to all interested stakeholders and readers.

Launched on the 20 of May, which is the National Day of Armed Struggle ignited back in 1973 by the Sahrawi liberation movement (Polisario Front) against the Spanish colonization then against the Moroccan illegal occupation and expansionist adventure, the Website aims to provide for the needs of sister embassies, representations, and institutions operating in Addis Ababa and elsewhere, by providing useful and reliable information on the latest developments concerning the conflict directly from authentic sources.

Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) monitors the trade from the occupied territory on a daily level, and has done so for the last decade. For the eleventh year in a row, WSRW today publishes a detailed, annual overview of the companies involved in the purchase of phosphates from occupied Western Sahara. The law on decolonization has two primary objectives: transfer power from colonizer to people in accordance with their will and protect the people until that happens. On 21 March 2024, Advocate General Ćapeta delivered three linked opinions at the European Court of Justice that seriously undermine these objectives.

The cases concern EU trade agreements with Morocco purporting to apply to the territory of Western Sahara.

Since May 10, 2024, the Moroccan occupation forces have besieged the residence of the human rights defender and former Sahrawi prisoner of conscience, Ali Salem Tamek, who is the president of the Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders in Western Sahara.

This action was in response to an attempt by a group of female activists from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the founding of the Polisario Front.

The siege targeted Tamek’s residence, located in the Al-Mustaqbal neighborhood of the occupied city of Laayoune, and was carried out by a contingent of police officers and officials from various civilian and military divisions of the Moroccan occupation forces. They maintained surveillance and continued the siege of the residence even after the departure of the Sahrawi celebrants.

In a related incident, on May 13, 2024, the Moroccan occupation forces prevented the family of Sahrawi human rights defender Hussain Moujahid from constructing a reception hall to welcome guests for the naming ceremony of his daughter, Soumaya Moujahid. This residence is in the same building where human rights defender Ali Salem Tamek resides.

The siege of the building where the residence of Sahrawi human rights defender Ali Salem Tamek is located coincided with his absence, as he has been on a visit for over two weeks, engaged in his human rights activities and advocacy for the rights of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. This visit led him to the Sahrawi refugee camps, accompanied by a group of Sahrawi human rights defenders, both men and women.

In total, 14 cargos of liquified butane gas found their way to El Aaiún in occupied Western Sahara in 2023. Based on the analysis of the vessels' routes and draughts, WSRW estimates the total cargo at around 36,000 tonnes of gas, slightly less than the year before. The transports were made by thirteen different so-called LPG tankers.

Human rights activists in Western Sahara are being targeted by mobile malware

New mobile malware masquerading as a news app has been spotted targeting human rights activists associated with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a partially recognized state in the western part of the Sahara desert.

Researchers at Cisco Talos and the Yahoo Advanced Cyber Threats Team uncovered the malicious Android mobile app, which pretends to be a variant of the Sahara Press Service app, run by a media agency associated with SADR.

In a spying campaign that Talos believes began this January and appears to be in its nascent stages, the custom-built app has been distributed via spearphishing emails sent to human rights activists in Morocco and SADR, also known as the Western Sahara.

Talos assessed that the app and surveillance infrastructure for the campaign were custom-made, suggesting “a heavy focus on stealth and conducting activities under the radar.” The app itself displays legitimate news content from the press service, but also allows the attackers to steal information from the target’s Android device and execute arbitrary code.
