Let’s continue our marvelous trip into GUI Wonderland, where we’ll learn 80s computing alongside our trusty Apple Lisa, the first personal computer with a GUI!

I'm recapping the analog and logic boards on my Macintosh SE, because they have known leak risks. Is there any evidence that the Sony PSU has similar problems, or can I leave it alone?

I have the following devices:

  • Apple IIC+, whose internal drive is working.
  • BMOW floppy EMU.
  • external 3.5" drive that just says Apple 3.5" drive.
  • 2 drive 5.25 external drive.

What is the best configuration to set these up in to maximize storage space and secondarily to provide the most media capability?

Thanks!

Hello, I’m looking for a way to upgrade my Quicksilver RAM. I’ve bought some 512MB sticks but they’re either not seen by the system or they crash it after a big allocation. How can I make sure the RAM will work?

Hi Everyone.

I am a user of an Apple IIC+! yay! I use mine mostly for Applesoft Basic programming.

Is this a place for those of us who rock Jurassic Apples?

It wasn’t formatted (or maybe A/UX?) but it initialised just fine. The power supply probably needs a recap but still outputs a stable 12V when connected to the hard drive. I can’t find much about these, are they rare?

Upgrades include: SCSI CD-ROM, 68040 accelerator, 128MB memory, ethernet, and not shown in this picture, a grayscale card. All in a clear MacEffects case.

I recently flew out to VCF Southwest in Texas, and had my 2400c out on the plane. Battery lasts a whopping 30 minutes!

Through sheer luck a friend of mine gave me this IIcx (battery not exploded).

It has an Ethernet card (Asanté MacCon+ II E thick and thin) and a Supermac (unknown) graphics card.

It also came with a 256 SCSI drive.

With what can I replace the battery? Do I need it to run at all?

I had luck finding a G4 AGP with a Sonnet Encore ST 1.8 for only 80 bucks some months ago. Because the technical and optical advantages of the QS i decided to put the Encore into a QS 733 and build the QS i could never afford in my younger days. Now with a 1.8GHz G4, 1.5GB RAM, an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro SE (256MB) genuine Mac edition (on which i installed a NOS Zalman cooler to tame the heat), a 4-port SATA PCI card, a 128GB SSD and noctua and bequiet fans, this PM runs circles around all my other G4 and is my weekly-driver for music (Reason, Sibelius), some graphical stuff (AI, ID) and retro gaming.

I hope that some day i will find either a MDD 1.42 DP or a 3rd party Dual G4 CPU upgrade card for my QS. And not for thousands of dollars…

Time to create some content!

For me the Power Macs G4 have an absolutely timeless and pristine design. Especially the Quicksilver stands out as the perfect workstation design. Even though i have/had several G5 and Mac Pros, which are landmarks in computer design too, i don't hold them in veneration as much as the G4.

Could also be because i grew up with them. My father has a printing company and has been working with Mac all along. My first own computer was a G4 DA 466MHz which i "inherited" from him. After a brief interlude with an iMac G3 (much more compact, but slow af and no hardware to play with), i bought a G4 QS 733 second hand for about 200 bucks in 2005, but it died the PSU death soon after. Unfortunately my dad sold his QS 1GHz DP some days before for a G5 2.7 DP. So i ended up with a G4 MDD 867 DP, which served as a print server for several years after my switch to intel Macs. Two years ago i did want to sell it, but the PSU was dead. So i tinkered with it and built in an atx PSU. But instead of selling it, i got infected with the Power Mac fever again. Fast forward, my GF isn't as happy with my considerable collection of G3-5 as i am.

I’ve always loved the TAM (even though most people seem to hate it) and the Color Classic (even though it is slow af)

What’s your favorite one?

g3 imac laying around (self.vintage_apple)

hey folks, I've got a g3 imac that's been in my garage since a relative of mine passed in the 90s. He was some kind of theoretical physicist. Should I give this thing a go? Is there any particular guide to hardware from this era? Stuff like bad caps, leaking batteries etc? I'm guessing this thing probably has some kind of MacOS 9 on it. I'm out of town until next week but if I get any good tips I'll try them out when I get home. Thanks!
