It is often said that a flag should not have more than three, maybe four colors, but I think South Sudan does quite well with six colors.

It also spawned an old Kuwaiti flag in use until 1871:

Admittedly, the sources seem a bit scarce on the posted version of the flag. But at least there seem to have existed at least a similar flag used by the Al Bin Ali tribe.

The five stars originally represented the five provinces. However, the province division has been redrawn since, but they still kept the five stars.

Originally, they had this flag from 1975-1992:

Cape Verde flag 1975-1992

Clearly, this version was related to Guinea-Bissau, to which Cape Verde had close ties. Both were Portuguese colonies and their independence movements were intertwined. There were even ambitions unifying the two countries.

Wikipedia on the relations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Verde%E2%80%93Guinea-Bissau_relations

It never happened though, and Cape Verde broke a way after a coup in Guinea-Bissau in 1980, and went its own way with its own flag, which I personally find more appealing. It is more distinct and free from the coat of arms.

This was an earlier proposal, but in my opinion the current flag looks better: Proposal PNG flag

When it first became independent, in 1962, it had a sorghum plant and a drum in the middle instead of the stars:

Burundi flag 1962-1966

When the monarchy was abolished in 1966, the drum was removed, as it was a royal symbol:

Burundi flag 1966-1967

In 1967, they finally settled on the three stars in the middle, representing the three ethnic groups of Burundi: Hutu, Tutsi and Twa.

They actually changed the aspect ratio in 1982, so the title is not entirely correct, but today still seems like the most appropriate day to post their flag.
