Western leaders should not be intimidated by Kremlin threats of nuclear escalation, the head of the CIA said on Saturday, and be willing to consider allowing Anglo-French Storm Shadow missiles to be used inside Russia.

Bill Burns, on a visit to London alongside the head of MI6, said the US had brushed off a previous Russian nuclear scare in autumn 2022, demonstrating that threats from Moscow should not always be taken literally.

“Putin’s a bully. He’s going to continue to sabre rattle from time to time,” Burns said. “We cannot afford to be intimidated by that sabre rattling … we got to be mindful of it. The US has provided enormous support for Ukraine, and I’m sure the president will consider other ways in which we can support them.”

Lithuania installed "dragon's teeth" and mines in front of the bridge on the border with the Kaliningrad region

"This is a precautionary step to ensure more effective defense," the Lithuanian Defense Ministry said on Twitter. The ministry explained that the Queen Louise Bridge is Russian property, so Lithuania cannot install "dragon's teeth" and mines on the bridge itself, but only in front of it.

Major Russian banks have called on the central bank to take action to counter a yuan liquidity deficit, which has led to the rouble tumbling to its lowest level since April against the Chinese currency and driven yuan swap rates into triple digits.

The rouble fell by almost 5% against the yuan on Sept. 4 on the Moscow Stock Exchange (MOEX) after the finance ministry's plans for forex interventions implied that the central bank's daily yuan sales would plunge in the coming month to the equivalent of $200 million.

The central bank had been selling $7.3 billion worth of yuan per day during the past month. The plunge coincided with oil giant Rosneft's 15 billion yuan bond placement, which also sapped liquidity from the market.

"We cannot lend in yuan because we have nothing to cover our foreign currency positions with," said Sberbank CEO German Gref, stressing that the central bank needed to participate more actively in the market. The yuan has become the most traded foreign currency on MOEX after Western sanctions halted exchange trade in dollars and euros, with many banks developing yuan-denominated products for their clients. Yuan liquidity is mainly provided by the central bank through daily sales and one-day yuan swaps, as well as through currency sales by exporting companies.

Chinese banks in Russia, meanwhile, are avoiding currency trading for fear of secondary Western sanctions.

Russian military raided another store in Kursk >region

In August, Russian soldiers robbed the Kapitosha children's clothing store in Kornevo (less than 20 km from the border). The corresponding video from the store's surveillance cameras was published by blogger Michael Naki. The camera lens captured a soldier in a Russian uniform stealing cash from the children's store's cash register. The date of the shooting is listed as August 12.

“And this is our Russian army, our defenders,” a female voice behind the scenes comments on the recordings from the Kapitosha cameras in one of the videos.

The authenticity of the video was confirmed in a conversation with ASTRA by a local resident who left Kornevo (he asked to remain anonymous). He claims that "according to rumors , the military broke into almost all the retail outlets." His family's business also suffered from the Russian military, the man says, although he was told about this by witnesses - and, accordingly, he does not know for sure what exactly the military stole.

In August, videos appeared online showing Russian military personnel robbing a Wildberries warehouse and a mobile phone store in the border area of the Kursk region.
