25-year-old Archana Choudhary was in a field on the outskirts of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, when a fully-grown tiger appeared from the bushes and began to drag her one-year-old into the undergrowth.

Archana managed to wrestle her son away from the tiger, receiving serious injuries to her back, waist and arms in the process, as well as a punctured lung.

Her screams brought locals running and they chased the tiger away with sticks before rushing the young mother to hospital. Amazingly, her son had only minor injuries, and both are expected to make a full recovery.

The crippling fuel shortage in Sri Lanka has left many of the country’s fishermen unable to go to sea, forcing them to work odd jobs for half their previous salaries (as little as $0.70 a day) as national inflation sits 65% higher than last year.

Kerosene supplies have resumed but with prices around four times higher than before as government subsidies have been slashed, despite power and energy minister Kanchana Wijesekera promising direct cash subsidies.

For some the only option left is the black market, but with those prices reportedly 20 times higher than previously subsidized kerosene it is a pointless exercise.

A young workforce, business investment, and economy-boosting reforms are the main contributors to the projected growth - which will see the country add 28% and 22% to regional and global growth, according to experts.

Service exports and domestic consumption are also expected to fuel the boom - which predictions say will see GDP grow 7% next year. “The economy is set for its best run in over a decade as pent-up demand is being unleashed,” the analysts said.

New Delhi cut corporate tax rates and revived private investment - producing ‘healthy’ balance sheets and boosting business confidence.

President Wickremesinghe says the Fund is holding back due to the unrest in the country - at least till end of August.

He added that there was no point blaming his predecessor, urging parties to come together instead to help pull the bankrupt nation out of crisis.

He also claimed that it was useless to pin hopes on other countries as these have signalled they won’t help either till the IMF deal is done.

Sri Lankan MPs have chosen six-time PM Ranil Wickremasinghe as president Wednesday in a 134 to 82 vote ballot against nearest candidate Dullas Alahapperuma.

73-year-old Wickremasinghe has led the negotiations with the IMF over a critical bailout package but remains deeply unpopular with voters; only a small handful of lawmakers declared their support for him publicly.

Predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa had appointed Wickremasinghe as his PM in May before fleeing the country and resigning by email last week. MPs loyal to Rajapaksa have reportedly offered their backing to Wickremasinghe under assurances he will crack down hard on protestors who burned down their homes in May.

Remembered Malala, the girl who fought for basic human rights for little girls so they could go to school? She still exists, the media just stopped talking about her once they found out she had "extreme" beliefs ¯_(ツ)_/¯
