I currently have my business phone number on JMP through Chatterboxtown.us. Apparentlly, I now have a Snikket account set up to which I can migrate to, presumably for more reliable phone service. Problem is, I'm trying to learn what this entails and what to expect but I can't find any documentation to read through to learn. Since this is my business phone, I'm not interested in fumbling through it and learning along the way at the risk of losing service, stored messages, contact info, etc. The only thing I know is I can use the "invitation" from Snikket to get set up, but that isn't educational - it actually just creates questions.

Is there a migration guide out there somewhere that I'm missing to learn about this migration? I want to learn what happens to my message history, contacts, etc etc. I have a lot of customer history and contacts in this business account and I need to be confident what I'm actually doing.

Thanks!

There's a lot of consternation about the number of services that refuse to register against a JMP number. At the core I suspect it's about information sharing — your carrier will happily give your details to third parties, where JMP doesn't have that information to begin with.

I dealt with this differently. I stopped thinking of my mobile as my 'real' number, but instead as my public one. All personal contacts have my personal JMP number, Signal is registered against my JMP number. Cellular SMS has notifications silenced. When an SMS is important, like when logging into a bank, I know it's coming. No unexpected SMS is welcome.

This works for me because my friends don't use voice, so JMP having metered talk time doesn't matter. But mainly, I don't think of either number as 'real'. I pay for both, and each has its use.

I signed up for jmp.chat using Cheogram installed from F-Droid. It assigned me a new Snikket instance and a new Jabber ID there. It auto-generated a password. Today Cheogram is wouldn't launch at all. After a a reinstalled my saved auto-generated password is gone. Snikket told me to reach out to jmp.chat.

There is no email support. I tried messaging the support account ([email protected]) from another Jabber account and received a forbidden response. What should I do next? Just sign up for another number?

Hopefully it is useful for some one to know that when setting up sip for the yealink t33g you need to enable the "G729AB" codec. More generally jmp uses bandwidth.com for sip and you can find there supported codecs here
