Every game I use proton with, the videos will not load. Any sort of MP4 file located in the games files refuses to load. How do I fix this issue? (I am using the "Proton Experimental" setting on Steam compatibility. I have tried to disable experimental and use a stable build, however the same issue still occurs.)

Original Title: My father had brought back an Atari 1040STF from Germany in the early 90s. A decade later, the computer landed in the bedroom of a 6-year-old Japanese girl. The young woman I have become has never forgotten her Atari ST. The Hatari emulator under Ubuntu lets me relive those good times. 😊

I’ve been wanting to daily drive linux for years, but gaming has always held me back. I haven’t been watching this space for years really, but have been blown away recently by steam deck performance and the general rise in availability for linux gaming.

I’m debating trying to daily drive linux and wanted to ask a couple of (probably overdone) questions. I know the way that makes most sense is to dual boot, use linux for what I can and windows as fallback while I set everything up/fix anything that might not work. My dream scenario however is to not have a windows install at all, and to use a VM for what I can’t get to work on Linux. I’ve dual booted before and it just didn’t work for me, i mainly just don’t like the idea of needing to reboot and be on a different OS for xyz purposes only.

  • Do games that rely on Denuvo (ick) or Easy anticheat work on linux? (Games I’m mainly concerned for in this regard are Rust, Tarkov, BattleBit and maybe battle.net games if I ever want to hate myself again)
  • Is gaming on a Windows VM suitable for online games (ie is latency an issue) or resource intensive games? I don’t necessarily care if my main OS is slow while I’m playing on the VM apart from discord or a YouTube/twitch tab.
  • Does discord screen sharing work well? I remember that being a huge pain for me to get working (never did) a few years back
  • Is it possible to get Xbox GamePass working on linux (without vm)? What about other UWP apps?

Thanks!

I've been working on playing SkyrimVR on Linux, and at one point had it working, but am now having an issue with running it. More specifically, here's what I've got going on.

I'm running steamtinkerlaunch as my compatibility tool for SkyrimVR. Through it, I am running Mod Organizer, and in Mod Organizer I am launching sksevr_loader.exe. This has worked at least once in the past. I am running SteamVR and turning the controllers on before running SkyrimVR. I'm using proton experimental to run the game. When I launch sksevr_loader.exe, currently, my headset switches from Steam home to the empty grid-zone loading screen with "Next Up" and the SkyrimVR logo displaying. The game loads and gets to the menu, but only displays on my monitor. I can hear audio through my headset, and moving the headset around and interacting with the controllers works as normal, but the headset video is stuck on the "Next Up" loading screen. I can even load my save successfully and get in game, which shows on the monitor, but still just the "Next Up" screen on my headset. Not sure what is going on. Any thoughts on what it could be?

My first thought is that an update to proton experimental broke it, but I'm not sure. Running the game or sksevr_loader.exe directly outside of Mod Organizer leads to it properly displaying in my headset.

Hello ! It’s been a few days thats I desperately try to run properly GeForce Now on a browser at QHD@120 on a steam deck connected to an external monitor in display port.

I succed to run it at QHD@120 by using user agent switcher, but the input lag is… insane. It’s about 2s of input lag. However my internet connection is very good (900mbps with 8ms ping).

I saw a few post that’s say to disable « hardware acceleration » not very sure what is it but I did. And nothing better.

Do you think it’s possible to get it run properly ? Have you some interesting tricks to explore ? I’m a little bit lost why it doesn’t works.

Thanks

I currently have a ~9 Year old GTX Titan X, which worked perfectly fine for years, but since around two 1.5-2 years ago, I started to get driver crashes during certain games.

Over time, various driver updates changed the exact behavior of the crash slightly. While it used to be a sudden mono-colored screen (XID 16 in the logs) and no way to recover, it is now just a freeze (XID 8 in the logs) and in 50% of cases I can actually just kill the application and everything is fine again. In the other 50% the screen and mouse just hangs. In all cases, the system is still running and I can login over the network via ssh to read logs and do a clean shutdown.

A lot of games work perfectly fine, even at high resolution and details. Examples are:

  • Satisfactory
  • Subnautica

Some immediately crash:

* Old School Runescape * Path of Excile (used to work perfectly fine in the past)

Some only crash when I go to certain places but can otherwise be played for hours without any issue: * Genshin Impact (Grand Narukami Shrine, certain cut-scenes)

With FFXIV I had a lot of random crashes, but playing with the setting showed that higher resolution and putting more load on the GPU actually made crashes less likely.

Weirdly enough, The amounts of crashes greatly decreased after getting a new 4k display with higher refresh rate. The difference was so big that I first thought the display was the issue all along (I actually bought it in anticipation of getting a new card later, the old display only had DVI and newer cards obviously don't support that anymore). The new display is now connected over DP, crashes are still happening, but less frequent.

I don't see how it can be a thermal issue. I would really like to know if this is a hardware issue and if it can be fixed. I mailed the error reports to nvidia multiple times, their support seems to be a black hole, no answer ever comes back out.

Is there any tooling available today or any good guides on how I can diagnose such an issue? My guess at the moment would probably be the RAM of the card, but I can't even find a RAM testing tool for Nvidia, nor do I find if there is actually something I could do about it once the issue is identified.

Sure, I could just get a new card, but it seems such a waste to throw it away when it would otherwise completely deliver the performance I need and mostly works.

Regards

Hello everyone. I've recently switched my gtx 1050 for an rx 580, which is definitely an upgrade - except for playing Skyrim. The shadows appear as lines forming squares and smudge around. Performance is also a lot worse than on my gtx 1050, which might be a related issue and definitely shouldn't be the case.

I can't find anyone with a similar problem. I verified game files, reinstalled Skyrim, set up new prefixes, switched my installation drive, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, different graphics settings, switching between Wayland and X11. No errors in steam or journal.

I'm completely clueless. Here's a video of it in action: https://streamable.com/2apmyw

And for those who don't want to load a video, here are two screenshots (showing different shadow detail levels): https://imgur.com/a/ska8HTI

I'm on 6.3.9-arch1-1 running KDE Plasma Plasma 5.27.6. Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB RAM.

Its as the title says. I am a complete beginner to this stuff. I've previously set up Paper servers in windows but windows has lots of annoying problems and I decided I had enough of them.

What I'm using for this is an older gaming PC I no longer have a use for and as of writing this post I'm going to wipe it and install the latest version of Ubuntu.

So with that said, I am wondering what is the best way I could set up a server on linux (it could be a different distro if that is better than Ubuntu).

I'd ideally like a way to have it auto backup, run plugins auto restart, and ppossibly even a way to remote access the server.

If there is any more info about my setup I need to provide feel free to ask.

On windows 11, halo 3 runs more than 300 fps.

On linux, it runs like 130 fps and never faster. I tried many proton versions and the GE versions.

Is there something I can do?

Here's what I did

  • Steam runs in BPM on a Kubuntu PC.
  • I added Firefox to my steam library as a non-steam game and edited the shortcut so that it automatically opens netflix in --kiosk mode.
  • I set up a custom controller layout so i can use netflix with my controller

Works: I can use the layout to steer the mouse and click using the controller.

Here's what I am trying to do

I want to also make a keyboard out of my controller. I think that radial menus will make a reasonable input method.

The Problem

Virtual menus do not show up. At all.

What I checked: Enable Steam Overlay in Settings

Any Ideas, what to look into?

Honestly I tried with a few games and I couldn't notice a difference in performance between compositor ON/OFF. Do you still disable it or do you just leave it on? I'm on an AMD RX 6750 XT.

Previously, the overlay worked fine, but recently I wanted to play brawlhalla and noticed that when I pressed the combination of keys, the overlay was not available. I went into the steam settings and saw that it was disabled, turned it on but it did not change anything. arch distribution gnome desktop

I recently moved to Ubuntu 22.04 because windows just became intolerable and using Lustris with Proton I was able to get FFXIV working great. Better than it has in a year or more on windows. But I just cannot figure out how to install ACT(parsing program) on the same Wine prefix so it works. I even tried installing ACT on Lustris hoping it would work, and doesn't. I've been reading about wine prefixes and how to set them but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I'm not sure why this fix hasn't been pushed to stable yet but I wanted to share it because I didn't see anyone else suggest this as a workaround for the issue, in fact I saw some users just living without xone until it's fixed. I tried to install the AUR package for xone-dkms for Xbox One Wireless controller support, but it led to this error at its final stage:

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 6.3.9-zen1-1-zen (x86_64)Consult /var/lib/dkms/xone/0.3/build/make.log for more information.==> WARNING: \dkms install --no-depmod xone/0.3 -k 6.3.9-zen1-1-zen' exited 10```

The comments on the AUR package briefly do mention that it fails to build on kernel 6.3 and up. But that was months ago, and the package has yet to be updated. I saw that there were some commits to fix the issue but they haven't been pushed yet, installing the current version leads to that error and flags the AUR package as out of date. I was able to install the package using xone-dkms-git, which contains the commits that fix the 6.3 issue.

Hi there!

Sometimes I need to switch on / off my mic on Discord and since the two alternatives (toggle and push-to-talk) are exclusive, it tends to be a pain. I'm pretty new to Linux and to shell scripting. I have some experience creating macros in Windows but using Autohotkey.

I was wondering if someone has created a script for Linux / Windows / both? that does the following when holding "SOME" key:

  1. Switch from Mute toggle to Push-to-talk.

  2. Activate push-to-talk.

  3. On release: switch back to Mute toggle.

It would be very useful for me, also as I could learn a little about how it is implemented.

Thanks!

I've been playing Subnautica on Linux Mint and I've noticed an issue where the game lags more and more the more I build. Building generally causes slight lag to the game, however the amount of lag building has caused me is worse than on Windows.

It should be slight lag and only be an issue if you build a ton of unreasonably sized bases. However after building even one regular size base, I'll drop from 60+ to like 25 FPS. And building a second tiny base as an outpost? Down to like 15 FPS. Even with graphics settings super low.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions to fix this? I asked on r/Subnautica but nobody was able to help as we figured it was a Linux-specific issue.

Here's my PC specs, to show they're not the issue:

  • Linux Mint 20.3 (Cinnamon)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super
  • X570 I Aorus Pro
  • 2x16 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR4
  • Crucial P1 1TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD

Can you explain me what am I doing wrong? I am trying to run it through Lutris. It would be too difficult to explain what is happening, so I've recorded videos instead. Would you be so kind and take a look?

When I try to let Lutris to search for installers:

EDIT: ok, I've figured the path needed to be DIABLO/filename. However, now I have ended up with this instead: https://imgur.com/qj7u3CA

The issue: after flatpak SteamTinkerLaunch installation for flatpak steam, SteamTinkerLaunch cannot be used as it is not in the dropdown menu for compatibility tools.

I'm on fedora WS 38. I use flatpak steam & have therefore been trying to get the flatpak SteamTinkerLaunch to work, in order to mod TESIV: Oblivion. I have all dependencies, apart from pgrep, which dnf says it can't find

sudo dnf install pgrep

No match for argument: pgrep
Error: Unable to find a match: pgrep

There is an issue with installing & updating flatpaks at the moment, for which the bug fix is right around the corner. This meant that installing via gnome software was not doable. However, there is a workaround. By downgrading ostree and ostree-libs, the cause of the bug being in version 2023.4-1.fc38, I was able to successfully install SteamTinkerLaunch via commandline as is required.

flatpak install com.valvesoftware.Steam.Utility.steamtinkerlaunch
Looking for matches…

        ID Branch Op Remote Download
 1. [✓] com.valvesoftware.Steam.Utility.steamtinkerlaunch stable i flathub 19,2 MB / 22,7 MB

Installation complete.

I can also now see it is installed by looking at the gnome software addons under steam flatpak. The github for STL flatpak installation says it may now simply be picked as an option from the dropdown menu after rebooting steam (which I have done with each try. I also tried rebooting my pc entirely, aswell as installing with it closed, neither of which helped), but it isn't there.I launched steam from commandline/from my terminal, but the same issue persists: Steam acts as if it is not installed.

I'm stumped. Does anyone know why it doesn't show up?

i just got a fresh install of arch and steam installed and runs fine, but when i click "browse" to find non-steam games it just doesnt open the file manager/search thing

is there a way to check/change what file manager it's using, or add the game with the steam console instead?
