Lorenzo Ruiz

Lorenzo Ruiz (November 28, 1594 – September 29, 1637), also called Saint Lorenzo of Manila, is a Filipino saint venerated in the Catholic Church. A Chinese Filipino, he became his country's protomartyr after his execution in Japan by the Tokugawa Shogunate during its persecution of Japanese Christians in the 17th century.

On 27 September 1637, Lorenzo and his companions were taken to Nishizaka Hill, where they were tortured by being hung upside-down over a pit. He died two days later on 29 September 1637, aged 42. This form of torture was known as tsurushi in Japanese or horca y hoya ("gallows and pit") in Spanish. The method, alleged to have been extremely painful, had the victim bound; one hand was always left free so that the individual may signal their desire to recant, leading to their release. Despite his suffering, Lorenzo refused to renounce Christianity and died from eventual blood loss and suffocation.

2010 Philippine Bar exam bombing

The 2010 Philippine Bar exam bombing occurred on Taft Avenue near De La Salle University (DLSU), located in Malate, Manila, Philippines, on September 26, 2010, at 5:05 pm PST, a few minutes after Philippine Bar examinees began exiting DLSU. A Mk2 grenade was thrown at a group of Alpha Phi Beta members from San Beda College. They were standing near Tau Gamma Phi members, who police believed were the real target of the explosive. This resulted in injuries to 47 people, including two who required amputations.

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach-Jauncey (born September 24, 1989), formerly known professionally as Pia Romero, is a Filipino model, actress, and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss Universe 2015. Wurtzbach won Binibining Pilipinas in 2015 on her third attempt. She then represented the Philippines and won Miss Universe 2015, becoming the first Filipina to win in four decades.

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was born in Stuttgart, Germany, to a German father and a Filipina mother, and has a sister. The family later moved to Northern Mindanao region in the Philippines, first in Iligan city, then settled at Cagayan de Oro city, where she attended kindergarten at Kong Hua School and primary school at Corpus Christi School.

Ex-Iloilo mayor sought US asylum to prevent Duterte from falsely linking Roxas, Drilon to drugs

In his affidavit seen by Rappler, Mabilog said that when he was in Japan, then-Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald dela Rosa called him and told him to come home, telling him that he believes Mabilog was innocent. But shortly after the call, another unnamed PNP general called and warned the former Iloilo mayor.

“His voice was grim. ‘Do not return,’ he said. ‘Your life is in danger. The accusations against you are all fabricated, but if you go to Crame, you’ll be forced to point fingers at an opposition senator and a former presidential candidate as drug lords,'” Mabilog said.

Abang Lingkod Representative Joseph Paduano asked Mabilog if the two personalities he was referring to were Roxas and Drilon, to which the former mayor replied in the affirmative. Roxas was the Liberal Party’s standard bearer in 2016, while Drilon served as an opposition lawmaker during Duterte’s term.

Mabilog ended up in Duterte’s narco list at the same time that other local officials were also tagged as alleged narco politicians. These personalities include Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog and Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, who were both killed at the height of the drug war.

“We don’t have a timeline,” Año told reporters when asked how long the Typhon system would remain in the Philippines, noting that a panel comprised of officials of both countries would decide its future. “No plans to pull it out yet.”

“There will be consultation, but for now we need the … Typhon missile launcher for our training and upgrading the capabilities of our armed forces,” Año added. The deployment of Typhon, which can be equipped with cruise missiles capable of striking Chinese targets, comes at a time of escalating tensions between Beijing and Manila over contested areas of the South China Sea.

Reuters reported on Thursday the United States was testing the feasibility of the missile system’s use in a regional conflict and has no immediate plans to take it back. “Nobody can dictate to us on what to do,” Año said of China, while underlining the Philippine commitment to its alliance with the United States. “We know what is best for our country, so they cannot dictate anything (to) us, particularly on the deployment of this missile launcher.” – Rappler.com

According to Reuters, which spoke to Philippine Army Spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala on Wednesday, September 18, the missile system was still being used for training, and the decision on when to remove it has been left up to the US Army Pacific.

An unnamed public affairs officer for the US Army Pacific, however, pointed back to the Philippine Army, according to the report. The officer said the Philippine Army had allowed the Typhon to stay beyond September and soldiers trained with it as recently as last week, engaging “in discussions over employing the system, with a focus on integrating host nation support.”

A senior Philippine government official who spoke to Reuters on background said the Typhon was in the Philippines for a “test on the feasibility of deploying it in country so that when the need arises, it could easily be deployed here.”

“If ever it will be pulled out, it is because the objective has been achieved and it may be brought (back) in after all the repairs or the construction would have been done,” the official said. “We want to give them sleepless nights.”

Lilia B. Cuntapay (September 16, 1935 – August 20, 2016) was a Filipina actress and former teacher. She is popularly recognized as the "Queen of Philippine Horror Movies" for her subsequent appearances in horror movies and exceptional contributions to Philippine film industry.

On August 5, 2016, it was confirmed that Cuntapay suffered from a spinal cord illness and that she was unable to walk. She sought help from her friends and colleagues in the film industry to be able to raise money for her treatment. On August 20, at about 6 a.m, Cuntapay died in her son's home at Barangay Tartarabang in Pinili, Ilocos Norte; she was 80.
