Hey all, I’d like to grow some garlic at home in containers.

Problem is I live near Phoenix, Arizona USA so it’s quite hot outside most of the year.

Anyone have experience want to share some tips? I noticed some garlic bulbs starting to sprout in my fridge and thought I might be able to start some indoors from that.

I dont know how to crosspost, but I made the same post here

if others come looking for advice and find this post, might be answers there too

Spot the squash vine borer egg. This one had the potential to destroy the entire plant, based on where it was located. Check early and often! #gardening #vegetablegardening #zucchini #pest #squashbug @gardening

It's one week into a lovely zone 4 Minnesota July and Brian gives a tour of the veggie garden to see what all is growing -- and how well -- at this time of year

Seems to help with water retention and soil erosion, not so much with weeds. I end up with a bunch of wood shavings from woodworking so I've been trying to find a use for them.

Foreground is sweet potatoes and background is just your basic white potatoes. We’re struggling to keep the grass down in this garden (more on that in another post) but I’m really happy with these cedar boxes.

Lowe’s has this cedar fencing that’s like $2.50 a board. Each box needs 9 boards (I just chopped the tip off all the boards, and then cut three in half for the short sides) and I think the one post was $15 or so. Stapled some lining inside, three in old logs, used straw from our goats, and then crap dirt until the top inch. Hopefully these boxes look okay after a year or two because at just around $40 per box (6’x3’) I’m already pretty chuffed.

It's not a good feel.

I suppose this plot will be strawberries next year...

Eastern Iowa - excited to finally get fruit from one of these guys. If you aren't familiar, the whole genus is worth a Wikipedia browse.

Got a late start this season on my little deck garden here in Chicago, but everything is looking great regardless! This is only my second year of deck gardening this year is looking much better than last.

Its amazing what you can still manage to grow in a small space. Things I have growing:

  • Sunflower(front center)
  • Cat grass (bottom right)
  • Orange hat tomatoes (in the pot on the banister to the right )
  • String beans (windowsill on the left)
  • Cucumbers (vertical)
  • Cauliflower(vertical)
  • Nasturtiums(vertical)
  • A few different tomatoes(vertical)
  • Mini bell peppers (vertical)
  • Catnip(vertical)

Our garden is in its third year. These are the current plots/plants as of the start of June.

The goal was to have some form of soaker irrigation in place by the start of the month and we'd accomplished that, though it left much to be desired. We'll be improving on that for next month - one branching topology experiment is already in place and working well.

The strawberries and beans have been getting wrecked by pillbugs and the tomatoes have been getting wrecked by whiteflies and aphids; the other goal for next month is introducing some predators and pest control.
