Help Choosing (self.gaminglaptops)

Hi, I have the option to buy either of the laptops on the picture at the same price. That is the only difference between them, GPU and display.

What would you suggest, the 4090 with worse display or the 4080 with the better display?

EDIT: I finally bought the 4080 version, thanks to everyone for their input, it helped a lot.

First, apologies if this isn't the best community; please direct me to a better venue if so.

TLDR: I need to buy 2× used gaming laptops that are powerful enough for 3D-heavy games -- I don't know what to look for?

Situation:
My kids have used Lenovo laptops for their rooms, and after some years, their gaming choices (BeamNG and other such 3D-heavy games) mean that old business laptops won't cut it. They need to be replaced (the laptops, not the kids!).

Problem:
Back when I was young, I understood CPU and GPU requirements - these days I don't. Help!

  • An Intel i7 may be great but it may also be several years old. I don't understand the naming anymore.
  • Most normal laptops have integrated graphics which don't satisfy even most basic GPU requirements.
  • Real "gaming laptops" are expensive! And I need 2 of them! Gotta find something used, and I have no idea what search criteria to set.

I couldn't find a tech support page, hope this is welcome here!

Here's my predicament. I have an old HP lying around with a pcie amd Radeon 7 inside. That laptop has been down for a while, can't even get into the bios, just black screen with what looks like an error code blinking via caps lock light - 3 long blinks then 2 short ones?

Anyway, I also have a Dell Latitude 3420 with an Intel i7 1167g, 16 gb ram (maybe 32 if I harvest a ddr4 from the HP) and.. integrated Intel iris XE graphics card.

I'd like to add the Amd Radeon 7 to the Latitude 3420 but believe the only Pcie port is taken by the M2 processor, at least I believe that's the case, I know there was only one port when I upgraded SSD's.

So, I've heard of people plugging their PCIE cards in via USB/thunderbolt I believe, is that possible? Which adapter would you recommend?

Also, I'm not sure the little dell can power the Radeon 7 and would have to check, if I don't have the power is there anyway to adjust that in the bios, or could I potentially plug the external Radeon 7 into an outlet? That's my next conondrum. It's been a while since I've done anything like this and I'm used to desktops so am very rusty.. if I could just connect the laptop motherboard to a desktop power supply I'd probably do it lol.

I compared the two graphics cards and seems like the Radeon 7 is still much better than what I have, I'd just really like to use it.

Any information would be appreciated!

Also, I'd like to harvest really anything possible from the other laptops (another extra crappy HP) or repair the one I have and maybe just use it, it's touch screen so eh? But I'm pretty sure the CPU in my Dell is faster, the HP is an HP 15 VW 032 WM

Would I maybe be better off to repair the HP? It ran well at the time but I've no clue where to start with it, it's possible the hard drive is just gone but with not having any visuals at all I'm just assuming it's the display?

Anyway, if anyone bothered to read and try to make some sense out of my jumbled thoughts I appreciate you!

I had just bought the Zephyrus M16 for 2700 bucks. But for some reason it didn't get dispatched yet, so I just noticed they have this prime deal day thing on Amazon(.de, the German one, not sure about other Amazons) where I got it. It's now 2080 bucks (wtf!). So I cancelled my order and ordered again. Just an FYI, good time to buy I guess, lots of other laptops are on huge discounts with prime (I just got a trial, I'll unsubscribe later lol).

I had a normal ThinkPad T590, for work. But I recently dropped it and the screen is busted, thought it's better I buy something new than pay to repair. Since I'm already knees deep in image analysis, which requires a crap ton of RAM, a strong CPU and ideally a semi decent GPU, and just started getting into python coding, thought why not get a gaming laptop, it'll make my life easier. Of course I already have access to a beast of a workstation, but sometimes it's booked and you wanna do some work on your own laptop. Anyway, I saw the Zephyrus and thought it looks good, excellent RAM (32GB and can be upgraded to 48), excellent i9 (12900H), and of course the beloved 3080 Ti (and 2TB of SSD is greet for when I have to work because single images can be up to 4 GB sometimes).

What do you guys think? I'm fkn poor, I'm a researcher afterall, so I got this on installments from Amazon, please tell me I didn't do an impulsive purchase.

Hi! I'm looking at buying my first gaming laptop, but I have a preference that most people don't seem to care about: I want the trackpad to be really good.

I know that most people game with a mouse, which is understandable, but I don't always want to use one. I'm used to the amazing trackpads on Macbooks, and I'm wondering what the best trackpads in the PC laptop world are.

I've tried out an Asus ROG Zephyrus at my local Best Buy, and so far, that one seems to be the best. Are there any other brands that I should look out for?

Thanks!
