...I know Tabitha wasn't trying to leave, but her exit from Fromville (AKA "the island") made me think of this thing I wrote earlier on in the second season:

If they all get to leave Fromville, they'll do it by walking out together, as a group. Maybe it would look something like a biblical trial or a mythical quest, calling back to Father Khatri and Ethan's speculation about the place.

An individual trying to leave on their own is not ideal.

Nobody who arrived in the town had any indication that they were entering a weird/supernatural/whatever environment before seeing the tree. Why would a person have any forewarning before leaving?

Let's put aside the increased resistance the town and woods kick up when trying to leave. Let's for a moment pretend you don't encounter weird spiders, lighthouses, chained up creepy dudes, and skin worms when trying to escape. Let's say if you just keep walking you'll eventually just walk out.

What then? You don't know how to get back. You've left everyone behind in a place you don't know the location of or how to get there. And you, yourself, have been a missing person for months or years. What are you going to tell people?

Will you tell them the truth? Will you tell them that you have been in a magical town that's impossible to leave that's populated by monsters that obey vampire rules as long as you have a super special rock on the wall of your house? Oh, and by the way, I can name dozens of other missing people from across the country... some of whom disappeared after I went off the grid. Is that what you tell people? Because it sounds suspicious as fuck.

Even if they can't pin the blame for anyone's disappearance on you, your story is so insane that it will not be believed. No one will help you try to find the other missing people. You might very well become a person of interest when future people who missing under similar circumstances.

If you manage to walk out of the woods alone, you're fucked.

Since the last episode of this season is behind us, I am looking for some recommendations on what to watch to fill this void. Hopefully this thread won't be considered off-topic. I mostly lurk so I'm sorry if this does not fit the magazine.

I'm using word "similar" pretty loosely here - in general I like mysterious shows, not necessarily horrors or gore (but not excluding those).

  • It's probably nothing new, but just in case you haven't watched it yet, I'd like to recommend "Dark" (imho best to watch in original German audio and English subtitles).

  • I also love "1899" but it got cancelled after 1st season :( The show is complex and not without flaws, but I think it's interesting, entertaining, has great soundtrack, visuals, and production value. I think it still might be worth seeing as a curiosity but keeping in mind there won't be a resolution.

  • My absolute fave is "Severance" (on Apple TV+). Just a fantastic show that completely defies any expectations and has an incredibly tense and well put together finale of season 1. Can't wait for the next season.

  • Season 1 of "The Haunting of Hill House" is also great, season 2 is a bit worse in my opinion (it's like an anthology series so they are not really connected with plot) but still worth seeing.

  • I tried to get into "Silo" recently, but it wasn't a success for me, something about the pacing seems off. I will try to give it another chance at some point though.

This is a SPOILER FREE review.

Horror done PERFECTLY.

"FROM" is creepy, desperate, and hopeful. Every second is crawling with this sense of imminent dread. Time is ticking, and ticking, and ~ticking~... And they can't escape. But they still hope that that might change.

The characters are brilliant. From father Khatri to Boyd to Jim to Jade, they all serve their purpose perfectly, and the more secondary characters also manage to flawlessly push the plot forward, as well as provide some much needed reprieve from the main storyline of the show. Because the main storyline is INTENSE!

The way the different personalities clash and slow things down, beautiful chaos. Even just the dynamic between the town and the colony house! The best part, really, is how much power is in the hands of the people, how much THEY control their life in the town. And how much one person can doom so many others.

Still, my favourite thing about the show is the very clear theme of family. That's what moves everything, they all lost family, and they all found family in that accursed town. I love that.

The audio and the visual are both great. Everything is set up magnificently to give the viewer that rising terror.

The only real criticism I have is the acting. It's not bad, but it's not that great either. I wasn't familiar with any of the actors before watching this show, but I'm not exactly looking forward to what they might do next. Still, it doesn't really take away that much from the show, since they do a good enough job of conveying everything that needs conveying; occasionally they knock it out of the park too.

This season left a lot of mystery to solve; more loose threads than I can count.
