I am not always on the site daily. So for dedicated posters, watchful users and avid lemmy users, I am humbly requesting assistance in growing and monitoring this community.

Just comment below for those interested. Will be opening at least 2 slots as a start but will open more if this community becomes bigger. :)

Introduction

Fanfiction is a fan written story based on a popular media, book, anime or literature. It needs no detailed intro for a lot of us know what we want when getting into fanfiction. But if you don’t, read around for some ideas.

Basic Guidelines

  1. Be respectful - A fanfic is above all else, a safe space for one to explore and experiment. You might encounter others who have different opinions and views as you. And that’s fine. But be reminded that fanfictions are written for free, a true labor of love. In this case, “if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all” applies.

  2. Valid Criticisms are Welcome- that said, a fanfic can be an avenue for some to improve their writing. Valid and sincere constructive feedback are welcome.

  3. Be civil - let’s keep this place a safe and warm place for everyone to enjoy their fandoms.

  4. Proper Credits- Always credit when sharing works that aren’t yours.

  5. Proper tagging and labels- Do label your fandom when sharing a story for easy searchability. Example- Fanfiction Title [Fandom]

Writer’s Resource

  • Choose a fandom
  • Write… and write - it’s always the first step that’s most difficult
  • Don’t be afraid and/or ashamed - you write what you like. No pressure, no guilt. :)
  • Proofread… or not. It’s up to you.

Reader’s Resource

  • Respect each other’s fandom.
  • Feel free to read and discuss. Share what you love.
  • Requests are welcome (but note that this community is just created on lemmy. There might not be a lot of takers, for now.)
  • Enjoy and have fun.

Topic Ideas

  • Favorite fanfics
  • Writing tips
  • Sharing of reading lists

Suggestions are always welcome :)

The message said something about spam, did anyone see it?

I noticed that I love Mariner/Boimler in fanfiction, but if it went cannon I'd be upset. Thoughts? Is this common?

@Fanfiction of Our Own - A World Within and Beyond Fandoms

Okay, so the Usenet is coming back according to The Register.

I'm not sure, though, how many people will visit the #Usenet to read #FanFiction classics at their source. Although some very good stuff was posted there back in the day.

And I am actually pretty sure that no old #Newsgroup will see new #FanFic being posted there.

How long do you consider a normal length for a fic?

What do writers look for in comments? I read a lot but I've only written a little. I'm working on writing more in-depth comments then "This is great! Can't wait to see where it goes!" but so far I'm really just setting word count goals and dragging it out until I meet them. What do writers want to read?

11

Do you see them as anticipation? Or just unnecessary stress in reading fanfics? Have you dropped fanfics that ended in cliffhangers?

There are some fanfics that majority wouldn’t like but you personally enjoy. At the top of my head, an overpowered M.C or turning the main character into an O.P one is a guilty pleasure.

High school fics are another one. Which to me evokes a degree of nostalgia for my younger years.

How about you?

Given the chance that you can talk to your younger self. It might help others who are lurking here too :)

Feel free to add your tips and tricks. With enough inputs, we’ll be able to put up and organize a comprehensive community resource in the fediverse :)

Personally:

Least: Warhammer and its Universe, hopeless and chaotic. Even the golden age of humanity is built by war and conquest. And even the pique of technological development has stagnated. The world in general points to the forces of chaos eventually overpowering humanity. And the other alternative races are not appealing either. Even the Tau are naive and might succumb to chaos eventually.

Most: Pretty much any omegaverse: the idea of a soulmate who’s destined for you fills the hopeless romantic in me. I like the idea of nesting, skinship and even dominance and submission (wholesome mind you), and scenting. Even if at first glance there may be disparity between the sexes and ABO classes, their equal roles in societies can be evened out, depending on what canon you applied to it. On the flip side, you can also power trip and be born as an Enigma, a rare form of ABO who can dominate even alphas. The possibilities are endless. :)

How about you?

Ff.net have forums and communities where fans can discuss fandoms, their favorite authors and other works. With AO3, I’m not so sure if those communities exist.

So if enough people will want it here, a dedicated thread might be put up for it. What do you think?

I began my writing journey on fanfiction.net after a fan page on wetpaint.com went down (wetpaint was my OG springboard for all things fanfics, then ff.net, livejournal and tumblr). I still visit it from time to time, reading fanfics that are not present on AO3.

What about you? Do you still visit ff?

AO3 experienced DDoS attacks two days ago. But the site seems to be fine for now.

There’s an update here:

https://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/26449

For now, the only thing affected seems to be the invites. (If someone can confirm this working, feel free to comment below.)

So it’s safe to browse and use the site as normal.

Not going to link an article since the party behind the DDoS attack may not be who they say they are (meaning their motivations are essentially unknown) but I figured it might still be worth posting a discussion thread, if only to see what people are going to be doing while AO3 is down.

At the top of my head, mine would be an OOC without explanation (I don’t mind OOC. Just at least give a background why they’re out of character) and a build up with no pay off (although this goes for other fiction stories as well.)

The halfling walked hesitantly and with great stealth along the cold stone hallway. Ahead, a soft light flickered from underneath an old wooden door.

Reaching the door, he tried the handle and the door creaked open. The halfling's eyes looked around the room, moving like a bat's eyes might if it was looking around a room. In contrast to the grey and dark hallway, the wood panelled room was lit by the warm light of torches and scented candles, and soft violin music drifted from an adjoining room. Who was playing the music, he wondered.

From the adjoining room, a voice. "Have you ever heard such a song?" the voice said in an unusual tone, soft, yet sharp like a bat's tooth.

"There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea You became the light on the dark side of me -"

The door to the adjoining room opened and there was the Count. Behind him an antique chaise longue.

"I thought you slept in a coffin...?" the halfling said.

"Not when there are two of us," said the count.

THE END

Some of us are affected differently by what we’ve read. If deaths do occur in fanfictions, do they bother you? Why or why not?
