Ergonomic, split and other weird keyboards

Rules

Keep it ergo

Posts must be of/about keyboards that have a clear delineation between the left and right halves of the keyboard, column stagger, or both. This includes one-handed (one half doesn't exist, what clearer delineation is that!?)

i.e. no regular non-split¹ row-stagger and no non-split¹ ortholinear²

¹ split meaning a separation of the halves, whether fixed in place or entirely separate, both are fine.
² ortholinear meaning keys layed out in a grid

Hey guys, looking for advice on my first build. I'm looking forward to building a Dactyl Manuform but I've run into some hiccups that I seek your advice on. I apologize in advance if my English is a bit wonky.

  1. Wireless? I thought about going wireless and ordering a pair of nice!nano controllers. I assume it will be a bit easier to assemble (less components) and I can switch between devices easily, but I've heard it's a bit harder to troubleshoot. Is this a good idea or should I go wired for a first build? How do I go about connecting the battery and which batteries should I look into?

  2. How to solder? Most of the Dactyl tutorials and guides I've come across assume some level of soldering experience and skip over some steps - I have none whatsoever but I'm a very willing self-learner. What are some good resources to learn how to do this? I'm talking basic stuff including things like where all the components go and which connect to which.

  3. Compatible switches? I've looked into tactile switches and loved the sound (or lack of) Gazzew Boba U4 Black Silent. Would these be compatible and a good alternative to standard cherry mx switches?

Thanks in advance for your help!

My Lily 58 I built last year. Love this thing to pieces and it's my daily driver ever since

Or at least half of it. Finishing up the second half now but I couldn't wait to share. XDA Canvas, Milky Yellows, and a case by the talented NGM Design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4145471

A lovely board from Beekeeb, cannot recommend them enough. By far the best service I've had. Leo is incredible. The original right now uses TRRS. He is working on this version right now too.

First of all, the sweep is wonderful. I love myself tiny keebs and this one fits the bill. Sadly I gotta fix some soldering that fucked up over months of use, but it's just sooo nice.

I started with the default layout (in JSON/QMK) and made some minor tweaks, but it's largely the same.

I was forced by stupid leadership to start going back to the office, so needed a way to bring a board. Didn't want to go back to the Moonlander (though I have since the solder started giving out) for taking to the office, so figured out that it fits beautifully inside the case for my Bose headphones! Those never leave my desk anyway, so the case didn't get any use.

Anyway, if you run a tiny board with tall caps - this is the way - it works really nice and keeps things pretty snug without being overly so.

Great keyboard case for those of us who are kinda nuts.

Started work on this little beauty late last year, and after an initial fuck-up in which I soldered the microcontrollers on upside down (I'm forever grateful for the fact that my gf's dad has a hot air desolderer), it's been an absolute pleasure to type on.

Switches are Zealios V2, and I've added O-rings to soften the clack.

Recently, I've been looking into switching to a keyboard with an Ortho split layout. I want the cost to be as low as possible in case I end up not liking it. Any kits that would work for this? US btw, if that matters for availability

I had an interesting experience the other day. I have been using split keyboards for years, but only recently began using a Kinesis Advantage 360 Pro as my daily driver for work; I am so use to the layout now, that in instances where I have to use a non-split, or even my older splits, my fingers fail me entirely - like my brain forgot how to type, my thumbs eagerly searching for the thumb cluster that isn't there.

Choc spacing for plate (self.ergomechkeyboards)
submitted 2 years ago by nydas to c/ergomechkeyboards

Hi all,

I want to create a custom computer keyboard plate that is choc-switch spaced.

Are there templates for the slot that a choc switch would clip into (correct width, height & any angles ) that I could incorporate into a keyboard case layout? Plan would likely be to print a blank pcb with the cutouts, so something I could pull into KiCad would be ideal.

Note: cross-posted with slight alterations to 3DPrinting.

This board is so comfy to use. If I'm not at my desk, this is the board I use.

Board: ToTeM by GEIST
Case: GEIST's design in black resin (JLC)
Switches: Sunsets by lowprokb.ca
Caps: LDSA by lowprokb.ca and CS artisans by asymplex.xyz

Case: Wenge
Switches: Boba U4 55g (black)
Caps: DSA

Low profile key switches have the obvious advantage of being smaller than MX switches…but the problem is that silent options, especially if you’re into tactile switches, are seemingly nonexistent unless I’m missing anything?

Got my Glove80 yesterday 🎉. Still too early for a proper review, but loving it so far. The transition from a Kinesis Advantage is straightforward , the pinky columns feel easier to reach which is a definite improvement.

I'm really struggling with how to lay out my additional layers.

Where should I put brackets of all kinds, parentheses, underscore, dash, hash, back tick? Should I have a numpad? I just can't decide and wonder if there's already a moderately consensus best practice?

Am I still welcome here? Ever since my finger joints started giving out during my translation work I have started to improve my workplace. I have a self built mouseboard to do all clicking with my toes, and plan to improve that thing soon. Future plans include building more plushy button boards as I feel the hard surfaces aren't really helping. Would I find people with similar interests in this community?

I Recently found out that my work has a benefit where they give you a couple hundred dollars to improve your health somehow. Gym, massage, Ergo stuff, ect. I want o put it towards an Ergo Mechanical Keyboard.

I have seen LinusTechTip's video on the Moonlander and I think it is for me (love the white, ortho linear, and split). But are there other things you folks would recommend that I check out?

Thank you for your time!

My first true split build! I think it came out looking pretty good, besides the scuffed spray paint job in some parts. The typing sounds very marbly thanks to the mods and switches, just the way I like it.

Switches: Akko CS Piano factory lubed

Keycaps: Akko MDA Olivia

Mods: Tempest tape, PE foam, EVA foam, Poron switch pads

Hardware wise, Cut Slope is fully functional. Screen works, just need to figure out what I want to put on it.

Still working on a full case, but printed a quick tray for peace of mind while using it.
