Dear Coyotes and Colleagues,

There have been several rulings by the Supreme Court of the United States that impact all of us. California State University, San Bernardino is a public university. This means we were created and continue to exist as a service and resource to the people of the Inland Empire, as well as our entire state of California, and Nation by providing equitable access to higher education.

But, we can provide this access and an education designed for the global realities of our time only if we are able to recognize and address the lived realities of the students whom we serve. We cannot pretend that a few decades of formal legal equality mean that systemic racism, homophobia, economic barriers, and barriers to women’s full participation in our nation no longer exist.

Our differences are not to be feared. Rather, they are meant to be celebrated as the valued and valuable individuality of each of us. They serve as opportunities for learning about one another, enriching our lives and building stronger communities so we can face the challenges of the future together.

The work that our university has done to build diversity, equity and inclusion into the infrastructure and all aspects of CSUSB can and must persist. We will continue to advocate for student access to a college education. And then for ways to support our students throughout their academic journeys—there is no one-size-fits-all pathway. And finally, for the mechanisms to enable students to graduate without having to acquire future-stunting debt to reach their academic goals.

A dynamic and effective 21st century university is one that provides access and exposure to a global diversity of knowledge and experience and where all feel welcome. And that includes those studying and working here.

We cannot build bridges if we refuse to acknowledge the chasms and valleys that still divide.

We are CSUSB. We are here to serve our community and one another. And these are our values.

In community,

Tomás D. Morales President

Dear Coyotes and Colleagues,

The Board of Trustees of the California State University System announced earlier today the name of the new CSU Chancellor, Dr. Mildred García. She will be the system’s 11th chancellor and the first Latina to serve in this position.

On behalf of Cal State San Bernardino, I would like to extend my congratulations to incoming Chancellor García and to welcome her back home to California and the CSU.

I know incoming Chancellor García well from her years as president at both Cal State Fullerton and Dominguez Hills, as well as in her current role as president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. She has always been an outstanding colleague, knows the CSU and its students intimately, and has a deep commitment to the CSU’s mission in our state of California.

I look forward to working with incoming Chancellor García, once she assumes office on October 1, 2023, to repair and rectify the many issues that have been identified these past few years; to address the long-standing issues of funding and the continued strengthening of diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the system; and to assist her in making the CSU everything that it might and needs to be.

My thanks to Interim Chancellor Dr. Jolene Koester for her leadership and service to the CSU through these extremely challenging months.

Tomás D. Morales President

The Office of Risk Management would like to make you aware of a safety concern at the San Bernardino Campus. A bird has been observed dive-bombing adjacent to the Performing Arts building. More than one person has been attacked by a hawk or falcon as they walk through this area. Although local and regional agencies have been contacted, they are unable to remove the raptor as it is protected under federal regulations.

The safety and well-being of our campus community are of utmost importance to us. While we are actively working with campus and community partners to address the hazard to pedestrians, we want to ensure that everyone walking in the area is aware of the situation and takes necessary precautions.

Here are a few safety awareness guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Know the Time: Most dive-bombing reports received by Risk Management have been of sightings or events occurring between late afternoons, after 4:00 p.m.
  • Know the Duration: During nesting season (January – August) several types of raptors have a history of aggression towards humans. It can take up to 8 weeks for an egg to hatch and a young bird to leave the nest.
  • Be Vigilant: When near the Performance Art Area, stay attentive to your surroundings and watch out for the raptor's presence.
  • Maintain Distance: It is important to give the bird a wide berth. If you spot the raptor, avoid approaching it or engaging in any behavior that may provoke it.
  • Use Protective Measures: If possible, wear a hat or carry an umbrella to provide some extra protection from the bird's potential attacks.
  • Report Sightings: If you observe the raptor threatening humans or other animals, please report immediately to the University Police Department. If you witness a sighting, please report to UPD after-hours by calling (909) 537-7777, or Environmental Health & Safety Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m. -5:30 p.m. at [email protected] or (909) 537-5179.

We understand that encountering a dive-bombing raptor can be distressing, but we want to assure you that we are actively addressing this issue within the confines of federal regulations protecting the bird. In the meantime, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in taking necessary precautions for your safety. We will continue to keep you updated on any developments regarding this matter.

For more information about animals on campus please refer to the policy. Thank you for your attention and commitment to maintaining a safe campus environment.

Sincerely,-

At orientation, transfer students will not have any courses that you are preenrolled into. You will need to identify classes that meet requirements, fit within your time schedule and are open and available. Be sure to follow this guide on how to enroll in courses.

You will not be able to enroll in courses until the end of orientation, however, you can put desired classes in your "Shopping Cart" the night before, and when you are able to register at orientation, you can attempt to enroll in all of your prechosen courses (so long as they are open and available, all pre-reqs are met and there are no time conflicts).

Always speak to your academic advisor before enrolling in classes
