Maybe it's just me but I feel like Urban Artifact beers were better when they weren't filtered like they are now. Feel like there is a dramatic loss of flavor compared to the pulpy goodness it was before.

Fretboard Brewing Co. is opening in the former First National Bank building at 108 Harrison Ave. in downtown Harrison, in an area the municipality has branded as the District, a four-block retail strip created in 2017 with the goal of revitalizing its historic buildings. It's now home to 30 businesses.

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is moving to Sawyer Point/Yeatman's Cove.

Will be interesting to see how it does/feels compared to 5th and then 2nd/3rd street locations.

Better bring back the Schooners!

The Bay Horse traces its roots back to 1817. At the time, the bar only served men. Several floods from the Ohio River forced a relocation to Longworth Street, then to Fifth Street in 1829 and eventually to its current home on Main Street.

An entry from one of our local bloggers Gnarly Gnome details how Cincinnati is represented well in the Untappd community awards. A LOT of awards here so great work by our local brewers.

HighGrain Brewing Co. is getting ready to open its second location in the former Brentwood Bowl in Springfield Township.

The brewery bought the 50,000 square-foot space in 2022, shortly after the bowling alley shuttered due to the pandemic. Austin Neal, HighGrain’s director of marketing and community engagement, told me the company is “extremely close” to opening a new brewery and taproom at the location.

The brewpub, located at 6095 Montgomery Road, recently expanded its kitchen and dining room into 6097 Montgomery Road, an adjacent storefront in the development that also houses a Goodfellas Pizzeria. The spot used to be an American Family Insurance branch.

Today is the day we've been waiting for. Bockfest starts today and runs through Sunday.

Please see the following for more info:

  • Our thread on Lemmy here
  • The official Bockfest.com website.
  • There are Android and iPhone apps available to download in the respective stores.

One thing I did not know is there are ways to check-in and other things on the apps. If you check into all 3 Bockfest halls (Northern Row, Rhinegeist, Moerlein Lager House) you will be entered into a contest to win a $150 gift card for Brewing Heritage Trail merchandise.

Without further ado, prost! Enjoy the intertwining of Cincinnati history, bock beer, and Gemütlichkeit.

WELCOME to the Bockfest Megathread

The one stop shop for all your Bockfest information and discussion.

What is Bockfest?

  • Bockfest is a Cincinnati tradition!
  • Bockfest celebrates the coming of Spring and the old world style beer known as Bock in all its form (Bock, Doppelbock, Maibock, Eisbock, etc.)
  • Bockfest also celebrates OTR and the history of Cincinnati as a beer city

When and where is Bockfest?

  • Bockfest is from March 1-3 this year (Friday-Sunday)
  • Bockfest is celebrated at Bockfest Hall(s) (this year we have three- Moerlein, Northern Row, and Rhinegeist) but also at bars and venues all throughout Over the Rhine
    • Note- there are a lot of places not listed that still put Bock on tap so be sure to wander throughout OTR and find a place that suits you and serves delicious bock beer

What is there to do at Bockfest?

  • Drink Bock beer!
  • Watch the always eclectic parade on Friday night
  • Crown the new Sausage Queen (yes this is a thing) on Saturday
  • Bring the kids down on Sunday to pet goats, bunnies, etc. and participate in the Little Links pageant (kids wear either lederhosen or dirndl)
  • Take a tour through some of Cincinnati's oldest breweries and their lagering cellars/tunnels
  • Do a .5K fun run on Sunday followed by a Bock beer
  • Drink more beer!

Ok, but what's with the goats?

  • Walk on down history lane with us-
    • Bock beer originated out of Einbeck, Deutschland (Germany)
    • Due to their Bavarian accent, citizens of Munich pronounced "Einbeck" as "ein Bock" ("a billy goat"), and thus the beer became known as "Bock".

  • Also, everyone just likes goats

Great, I'm in! Is there more info?

But wait, there's more!

  • Bockfest is not solely on one weekend. Per our old traditions (3 plus decades!) we celebrate a bit more in anticipation of the glorious weekend of Bockfest.
  • Beefsteak Club Dinner
    • This is on February 8 but sadly tickets are already sold out
    • This event is $100 a plate and all proceeds go to keeping Bockfest alive and fee free
  • Sausage Queen prelims
    • To nominate a sausage queen, we need participants and these are chosen at venues all over the city. This thread will be updated with dates and locations of the prelims (please add one if you are aware already!)
    • These events are FREE (unless you of course drink beer at the brewery to support this)
  • Precipitation Retaliation
    • In years past Bockfest was nearly cancelled on account of precipitation (and last year the parade actually did not go on)
    • To counter these demons, we burn a snowman in effigy to ward off bad weather
    • This year the "precipitation retaliation" is Friday February 23, 2024 5P-8:30P at Northern Row Brewery & Distillery 111 West McMicken Ave

Given the turbulence this place has had since inception I'm thinking it's only a matter of time before they try to do the most graceful exit they can.

Post local brewery new releases that you're aware of. Include a review of them if you feel so inclined!

February

  • Urban Artifact Capy Snacks - Capy Snacks is a Fruit Ale brewed with real fruit. Not entirely sure what it is but is marketed initially for people who do not like sours (ie. bring your friends to the taproom even if they don't like sours.)
  • Bad Tom Smith- now canning and available at stores

Rhinegeist, already Cincinnati’s largest craft brewery, is preparing for nearly 50% production growth – 150,000 barrels of beer in one of the next few years – and it will likely need to expand operations to do it.
