FAQ (iusearchlinux.fyi)

Hello everyone, I want to answer a couple of frequently asked questions (and some made up frequently asked questions). Also you can ask questions in the comments.

How did you come up with the server name? A couple of weeks ago I nerd sniped this domain from someone who is also on this instance and did nothing with it until the whole reddit thing happened and I found lemmy. I noticed user names have the instance domain behind them. I suddenly knew what I had to do.

How much does the domain cost? 19$ a year.

How much does the server cost? ~~Currently it's a 7$ a month digital ocean droplet. How is the performance? Should we upgrade? Didn't expect to have over 100 Members already.~~ I upgraded to a 24$ a month droplet. To experiement if some issues go away with it.

Where is the server located? Currently in Frankfurt, Germany.

What distro does the server use? Ubuntu 22.10

Who has access do the server and database? Currently only me.

Can you edit the database? Yes, but maybe it would lead to unexpected bugs. I don't know. I will not do it unless I have to.

Will you edit comments? No.

**Will you charge 3rd party apps? ** No.

Is it complicated to host your own instance? Not at all. The lemmy devs provide an easy to use ansible script. I never used ansible before and now I want to use it for more stuff. You should have some experience with Linux and hosting. But don't be afraid if you have no experience to host your instance. You can probably Google and ask yourself though the setup.

How can I support the server? You can support the server by being active in the community. You can post, create communities, comment and engage. While I also like to lurk a lot it's important to create content. It's the most valuable thing (without content nobody will visit sites like reddit). Also it probably doesn't hurt to promote the server a bit. Regarding Server cost if the server cost doesn't increase substantially I don't need any financial support. I will try keep the instance alive as long as people are using it.

Should I create my own community? Yes (as long as it is legal and doesn't harm other people)

Does my community have to be related to Arch Linux? No, I think it's even better if it's not related. Having some random community with @iusearchlinux.fyi at the end seems amusing to me.

I don't see rules. Is everything allowed? Nope if we see something that is not okay we will not hesitate to ban someone or remove content. Everyone including the admins and mods should strive for keeping this a nice place for everyone. Everyone should feel welcome. If you argue with someone try to interpret what the person said in the most charitable way. In short try to make a positive impact in this community. We enabled that everyone can see the mod logs with the names of the mod for transparency. If you don't like how we moderate you can write us or make a post but please keep in mind we cannot make everyone happy and if you want have different moderation you can always create an account on a different instance. We have banned in total only one person and have not blocked a single other instance. We are not on the search to find small things we can use as excuse to ban anyone we don't like but we will act on reports. Please use the report button it's better to report someone just in case. We will not blindly ban someone. My other 2 Admins are great people and I trust them 100 percent to have a good judgement.

What's your favorite editor? neovim with lazyvim

What's your Terminal? Wezterm

What's your desktop environment? AwesomeWM

What's your favorite programming language? Rust (but I am not very productive with it)

Sorry for my bad english.

EDIT: How can I financially support the server? You can buy me a coffee on ko-fi

Hello everyone!

So earlier tonight the server seemed to be down for a while. What are everyone's thoughts on coming up with some type of alternative independent back-channel communication method to get short-form updates about outages and other important community updates (community as in for our server, not a lemmy community).

Obviously this ultimately depends on how the admins and mods of this instance feel about this; how willing are they to invest time into setting that up if its something that will not be run and modded by us but by them, and how willing they are to actually use it if it does come to pass.

I am thinking something like mastodon is quite good for this task, but of course if anyone has any suggestions or other ideas please share them. Let's get a discussion going, if this seems like a good idea to you write your thoughts about what you think is the best way to go about it, and if it seems like a not so good idea share those thoughts and reasonings too!

Hey everyone. Today I started noticing some people from eviltoast.org spamming the same message over and over again in comment sections (might even be the same person). I took a look at their instance and it doesn't seem to be a very old instance, and it seems like its not a bad place, except for this spammer. I already blocked one account but not too long after encountered the account in the link above. So after I block this guy too, and after reading this comment thread it seems its a bot and they will simply be back with more accounts. What do we do in this situation? Is the only option to simply block them every time we encounter one of their accounts?

It looks like it may be related to new comments, but they're not yellow every time. I just went on a post with "23 [Comments] (10 new)", but only one is yellow. I'm using the darkly theme.

I find it annoying because I can't easily see if something is a top-level comment or a second level comment.

Reloading unyellows them.

I was recently made aware that XMPP supports account integration with various fediverse platforms (including lemmy for Ejabberd).

I have long been looking for a proper chat platform that works with the fediverse and was more than disappointed by my experience with matrix. I don't know if there are other people interested in this so I'm making this post to see if there is any interest here locally.

I haven't used XMPP yet; but I'd definitely be willing to give it a shot if I could use it with one of my already existing fediverse accounts.

Happy new year to everyone! May it be filled with happiness and good health for you and your loved ones :)

The instance seems to work on PC after a relog but it's completely broken on my mobile client. Probably because it keeps a token and refuses to ditch it or something

Were there changes in the login mechanism?

Hi everyone! Wishing you all a happy holiday season, whatever it is you celebrate.

For me, it's the solstice. Do you have a holiday in particular? What do you do to celebrate?

What is our instance's status with regards to threads? Is there a simple way for a non-owner/admin to check such things for their respective instance?

Looks like there's a new tool out to help federate new communities that don't have anyone subscribed from a given instance yet.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] shall we add this instance to it?
I feel it would help people on this instance to discover new communities.

Is anyone else experiencing this? The posts section in my profile appears empty, as well as the community I moderate showing no posts. Ive checked this from Jerboa, Eternity, and browser on desktop and mobile. If I view my profile or the community while not logged in to my account everything shows up normally.

That is all.

Everyone I know who has gone on travel without a mask (including myself) in the USA is catching COVID. Mask up, y'all.

I will try to move this server from digital ocean to hetzner tomorrow I will start after I wake up so probably around 8am UTC. I hope it doesn't take too long but it could take a couple of hours. I am not very experienced with this.

I was wondering how many wayland users are here, and what is your gpu? Why not the other?

I for one use xorg, because of my ye olden nvidia gpu that does not mesh too well with wayland.

It has been a while since I last made a post questioning things, life has been really busy. But I currently got a little bit of downtime so why not make a new thread again :)

So the question is how often do you do updates? Every day? Once a week? Once a month? When XY thing happens? Never? Or is it just completely random?

I've noticed that federation here can be unstable lately - sometimes my comments will federate, and sometimes it won't.

An example of a comment I recently made that has not federated:

An example of a comment I recently made that has federated:

Might want to check the logs in case something's up. I don't think it's to do with the backend or whichever version it's using.

As you have probably noticed we took a pretty hands off approach to moderating this instance. If something is straight up malicious we will remove it, if not we will let the moderators of the respective communities to deal with it. We believe everyone should have the right to their own opinions, even if we don't necessarily agree with them and based on that we have not defederated from any other instance, till now.

Yesterday I came across what I would very much consider borderline, if not just straight up CP communities that someone on this server subscribed to. There was not just one single community, there were several on a singular instance. I told SΓΆren about it and the instance has now been defederated and the communities purged. Hopefully there shouldn't be any leftovers of it.

I don't imagine anyone having an issue with us doing that, but we just wanted to let you know for fully transparency. We like for people to have access to everything, but some things are just too much (and rightfully illegal).
