What to expect? (feddit.org)
submitted 4 hours ago* (last edited 1 minute ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Hi, the mods had a first chat on what this community should be all about. For those uninitiated we’ve collected the forerunner lore of this community bellow.

We are well aware that there is a growing sentiment to buy European, local or for some to simply boycott USA made goods. Different people have different expectations and goals. The movement, if you want to name it that way, is taking place at different platforms with different hashtags like #buyFromEU or #buyEuropean . We’ve got to figure out what this particular community will be all about.

The forerunner left us with a buyFromEU community inviting to talk about European-made goods and services. As the post Where to start? implies there are already several well-made sites that serve as community driven catalogue, where you can lookup stuff.

We would love for you to also discuss and share products and services here. Beyond of that you may also post relevant news, as long as they are related. E.g. if they are reassuring our buying decisions or if they affect us in a broader way. Posts where you share your successes would be even better. E.g. if you tell people about how you transitioned from products and services, so we see, that it can generally be done or where problems lay.

Due to the inherited name, buyFromEU we would like to soft limit the discussion to the European Union countries. We are tempted to read this as EU + friendly countries as long as this is within reason.

There are other European communities we invite you to subscribe too.

Due to the topic of products and services this community will consist of product placement. It might be hard to distinct between advertisement and a faithful review or proposal. This community is not meant for blunt advertisement and affiliate links will be removed.

Please feel free to comment on that idea and if anything is missing to us @[email protected]

Lore

A traveler from a place called Reddit found this realms. In his desperate search for shelter he made a unique account on feddit.org and named himself Soggy_Commission_934. Exhausted from the journey and almost with his last might, he opened the community buyFromEU and began to write an introduction for the sidebar. His thoughts are preserved in this tradition:

Welcome to BuyFromEU - A community dedicated to supporting European-made goods and services! Whether you’re looking for locally produced fashion, technology, food or services, this is the place to share, discover and promote businesses that contribute to a stronger European market. Rules: 1. Stay on topic 2. No Self-Promotion or Spam 3. Be Respectful & Civil 4. No Counterfeit or Non-European Products 5. No Politics or Nationalism 6. No NSFW 7. Moderator Discretion Applies

Little did he know, that other refugees and even some native fedditers would be attracted to this place. In the midst of his quest questions about the purpose of this realms came up and discussions broke loose. Personal messages were sent and Soggy became silent. In a last act of sacrifice he promoted a887dcd7a, a mere stranger, to Mod and vanished for good.

Soggy shall from now on be known as: the forerunner : he who made path.

TLDR: say hi if your want to help moderate.

Hi folks,

this community needs you 🫵… well, at least 1 or 2 of you to moderate (and the others to do what they do).

I'm looking for about two further moderators. The community is not too big and traffic not so high(, yet) and I’m sure we can handle that in a small group.

Preferably these people should be feddit.org natives and be ready to use Matrix chat for quicker communications.

Overall I imagine only few necessities to moderate but if bigger decisions need to be made, a transparent consensus oriented process shoud apply. If consensus cannot be reached we might need to Ouija first Mods will 👻.

After assembly First steps would be to talk about how to shape this community. What contents are preferred, what rules should be applied? Are we talking European in sense of the continent or EU (hint: I don’t have a strong opinion in this). I prefer to have the Mods to have a common ground on those topics and then present/discuss the idea in a public post and adjust the sidebar accordingly.

My ideal The pages shared in Where to start? make a great job of categorial listing products and services, we shouldn’t compete with that. At this place I would love to see people present and discuss European services and products, and more importantly share success stories or their impressions to inspire others. But if someone has a brighter idea, we (le futur Mods) should be listening.

Full transparency Original Mod left his house rules in the sidebar I’m trying to honor that. For selection I’m going to take a look at a user’s profile and maybe have a quick chat just to make sure people are really interested in building a community.

Edit: grammar and spelling.

There are some server rules which apply. Please be aware of them.

Beyond of that:

  • Try to stay on topic
    • It is easy to get sidetracked
  • Mind to (soft)limit the discussion to the European Union countries
    • 27 and counting
  • Try to avoid non-fitting politics
  • Only faithful product/service recommendations. No advertisement.
  • Excel and be excellent to each other

Banning

Except in cases of gross violations of the server rules, banning (temporary/permanently) happens coordinated by all mods, or in case of absence, coordinated with the other mods of this server (matrix chat).
Banning is a last resort, if preceding discussions could not settle the issue. If you got banned, feel free to appeal to the mods via private message.

Where to start? (self.buyfromeu)

In the last weeks several databases and websites emerged around the idea of buying European, or local.

Coming from different communities overviews of products and services can (for example) be found at the following websites:

If you are using Firefox or Chrome you can be nudged to do better by using the opensource Go-European-Plugin:

(If you know any other starting points feel free to comment.)

Hi, Is Fossify https://github.com/FossifyOrg a good google alternative?

7

Got here from @buyfromeu after switching browsers (from firefox to vivaldi) and making Qwant my search engine of choice.

Honestly I love @Vivaldi and I wish I knew of it beforehand. It has all sorts of nice features including this mastadon integration.

Yesterday I discovered these cereals brand in a local "hyperpharmacy" [ Basically a big pharmacy which has, besides pharmaceuticals, naturist stuff, supplements or organic / bio food. ] . They were at sale from 4.1 euro to 3.4 [ same price as Cheerios here in Romania].
-> Bio EU Agriculture -> Just 2 ingredients: 83% puffet spelt, 17% honey. [ Cheerios has 14 and 4 of them are diff types of sugar]. -> Yes they are good

There are more varieties such as choco balls, flakes, loops. https://turtlecereals.com/ - yes I discovered that they have a site.

Next step is to move from Windows to Linux.

Hello everyone, I wanted to share some helpful resources for deleting accounts from major tech companies (and especially US-Big-Tech). Many services deliberately make account deletion difficult, but luckily we have a strong privacy legislation and it's worth remembering that under GDPR Article 17 ("Right to erasure" or "right to be forgotten"), we have the legal right to request complete deletion of our personal data.

To ensure your account is truly deleted rather than just deactivated, I recommend checking the privacy policy of each service and specifically requesting deletion in accordance with GDPR regulations.

Here are two excellent websites that provide step-by-step guides and direct links for deleting accounts:

  • JustDeleteAccount.com - A comprehensive directory with direct links to delete accounts from over 800+ web services. The project is open source on GitHub, and you can contribute to it. They're also planning to provide an API in the future.
  • JustDelete.me - Similar to JustDeleteAccount, offering guides and direct links for account deletion.

If you know other helpful resources, I am happy to add them to this list :)-

Okay. This really is a movement. I’m wondering how big it is after all? I mean there are several reddit and lemmy communities, but aren’t that only rather small groups?

13

Genuine question, since the subreddit r/BuyFromEU is becoming larger and larger, actual migration feels due. Of course, we should use both platforms but right now using Reddit is more valuable and hence this platform is relatively small...

Any ideas?

Page is in German, but should be no problem to translate e.g. with the quite new cloud-less translation feature in Firefox.

They are not european-made but are made in Pakistan in fair working conditions. Their whole supply chain is fully traceable and use FSC-certified sustainable rubber, Fairtrade certified organic cotton or recycled PU leather. Additionally, part of the sale of each pair goes to an independently managed fund that provides healthcare, pensions and education to the workers and their families.

They are rated GREAT on goodonyou.eco

I've own maybe half a dozen pairs over the years, they are a great alternative to Converse or Vans skate shoes and offer original models too. The stitched-soles models are decently durable, the vulc models don't last as long but they are supremely comfortable.

Coming from @[email protected] as a post comment. He also mentioned These 10 companies control everything you buy dated 2017.

This may help navigate brands and brand owners.

(X-posted from Reddit)

Back in the day, before algorithms etc. what we had was webportals that specialized in linking sites with interesting contents. These were manually updated by people who were interested in whatever their site was about.

We still have some stuff like this, arguably Reddit sort of functions in this way still but it's kind of a mix of the old way of peer-to-peer content sharing and algorithms (and let's face it: an ungodly amount of bots). However mostly it seems to have gone out of fashion due to automatic algorithms (+bots) out-competing manual posting from people. However this is mostly true for most common denominator type stuff. It's easy to have algorithms push some topic of interest in general but every topic in the world has sub-categories. The more niche you get, the more clumsy algorithms get - not to the point of vanishing completely but they're not usually so fine-tuned - it's easier to cater things that in general appeal to a wider audience.

This is where you as an unique human can step in, and you can do it on Mastodon on Lemmy, depending on which more suits your needs. For example, I like ASMR, but I'm super picky and I dislike a lot of the current trends (fast and aggressive and overly sexual). I know I'm not the only one so it occurred to me to combine what I'm already doing (looking for certain type of ASMR vids) with posting my findings to Mastodon, giving me a reason to A: use Mastodon and B: eventually have a useful link to give to people who want to find the type of ASMR I like (slow and minimalistic). I'm not a content creator, I'm not looking to make a career out of this but I already spend time looking for the content I like because the algorithm sucks. It doesn't take a lot of additional effort for me to just post what I find to the Mastodon feed (https://mastodon.social/@slowasmrpicks if you're interested). Now if i see someone on social media bemoan the difficulty of finding this particular kind of ASMR, I can give them the link to my list - conveniently also directing people to Mastodon. AND if I actually get followers, I'll also have a way of pushing Peertube or Dailymotion if people start posting there more.

So here's an idea for you, if you have some niche interest that you look up stuff on naturally, because it's your hobby... why not do what I'm doing? Make an account on Mastodon or Lemmy for that specific thing and just post the link to what you found.

To people who are of my generation (and Reddit users in general since this is kinda how Reddit works), maybe I'm being a bit obvious but it seems to me the younger generation isn't even used to thinking like this. Sure they get reviews for big media like games and movies, but not meta-content online. If you post on social media, it's supposed to be "your stuff" and then you beg for likes and reposts to get the algorithm to pick you up etc. Curated lists don't make as much sense in modern social media environments but I think on fediverse it could work AND it would help generate a reason to be there, which they currently need as very few actual content creators have migrated. Also note that I'm NOT telling you to copy the content and post it, just link to it so the creator gets the engagement as they should.

TL:DR: Find something cool online that pertains to your very specific interest that you already spend time looking for? Make a dedicated account for it on Fediverse and post the link.

Bonus Tip: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/clean-links-webext/ (or similar for other browsers ) to strip URLs from any annoying tracking tokens.

Edit: As a side note, of course you can just post about some very general topic, why not. Just then you are competing with algorithms that are far more efficient at it than you are.

I’ve downloaded Here WeGo maps, but I’ve noticed that the app lacks a review system. Additionally, the detail level for most places is quite poor.

Which Google Maps alternative is your favorite?

I am not an economist, but I understand that EU companies need to be given some help to switch from US to EU services. We should think about defending temporary help for companies looking to do a switch. To be fair, companies that already do not rely on US companies should also be given similar rewards, under certain conditions.

The justification is fairly straightforward.

It is not easy to change the services a company is using. It takes time, resources, and money to change these things even when profit is the main motivator. This is especially true when changes at first are not necessarily for increased revenue but for long term health of an economy and to help certain sectors develop. And some of US services are extremely ingrained. How many companies depend on outlook, Microsoft, and Azure? How many depend on Gmail or AWS?

The idea can be extended to include tax breaks for foreign companies that rely on EU software, but that's an idea which most likely should be part of a different conversation and different package altogether.

Any thoughts?
