The latest version of Vivaldi on the desktop gets more powerful and personal, and ensures secure data syncing across platforms including Android, iOS, and in cars.

This update includes various small fixes.

While attention is often focused on the responses of Apple, Google, and Meta to the DMA, Microsoft's actions should not be overlooked.
Recent months have revealed Microsoft's concerted efforts to
either intentionally disregard the incoming regulation or expand its market power before the DMA takes full effect.

This disregard for the DMA manifests itself in a variety of areas, but
notably also in how Microsoft operates in the browser market:

Section 2.1 Microsoft has increased the prompts to users that look for an alternative browser
Section 2.2 Microsoft is imposing de facto Edge default exclusivity and is making it harder for Browser providers to create user-friendly browser default settings
Section 2.3 Microsoft increasingly ignores and overrides default browser settings,including in Outlook and Teams
Section 2.4 Microsoft is leveraging its innovative Bing Chat feature by requiring users to use Edge

Google’s Topics API will not be enabled in Vivaldi, and it cannot work in Vivaldi. It would need two things to make it work, and we have disabled both of them.

1. It would need a setting enabled for it to collect local profiles about you. We disable the setting by default, and we forcibly do it in a way that means that changes to Chromium cannot remotely enable it. We do not provide any settings UI to allow you to change it, and we will soon remove the new Chromium settings section for it. (Technically, you could enable it by editing your settings or installing an extension that manipulates it. However, all that would do is enable local data collection. It will not be used because of #2)

2. Before exposing the Topics API information to websites, Chromium checks if the setting is enabled or disabled. We forcibly make it always return “disabled”, even if it is enabled. So that even if you somehow manage to bypass #1 and enable local profile collection, it will not expose it to Google or other websites.

There seems to be a security concern by Vivaldi that flatpak might break chromium sandboxing according to this comment from one of their staff, although he does admit that he’s not a expert in the matter.

If nothing changes then getting Vivaldi as flatpak might be up to the community to create and manage. I am not knowledgable enough to comment on the sandboxing nor to create a flatpak.

But i am interested to hear what others might be thinking regarding this?
