Beginner question here: My grandfather gave me both of his cameras, because he's suffering from Macular degeneration and can't use them anymore. One of his Cameras is the EOS IX which works with the discontinued APS-films. Is there any way to still use this camera? Or will just be a (relatively) pretty paperweight?

The other camera is a Canon A-1 in a very good condition, so I think i have a decent foundation to start a new hobby.

I'm trying to understand why rolling shutter is a problem with electronic shutters, but not with electronic first curtain shutter modes. I've done lots of digging trying to get to the underlying reason for the difference, but I haven't had any luck, just various people talking about the fact it is a problem.

So fediverse photogs, who can help me with an answer?

Hi all,

I am a beginner photographer, and start to play with Affinity Photo. I know how to use basic tools (curves, exposure, filters) and I am starting to play with masks.

I have a portrait photo, for which I would like to do two different operations:

  • Desaturate the background
  • Sharpen a bit the person on the foreground.

For example, if you consider this stock photo:

I would like to desaturate slightly the yellow background and sharpen the person.

I have tried playing with various masks, but I don’t manage to obtain the effect I want. I either manage to desaturate the background and sharpen everywhere, or to sharpen the person and desaturate everywhere.

I am a bit at lost at what to search for to find adequate content. Does anyone have a link towards some guide or give me a quick idea of what I should use?

Thanks!

I've been having issues getting decent photos of sea life at aquariums. I went to two different ones recently. I used a Canon R10 at both: for the first I took a 24 f/2.8 pancake lens and felt like the maximum aperture wasn't providing enough light to autofocus fast enough. For the second trip, I used a 50 f/1.8 and that did address that problem, but I'm still left with blurry photos and massive blue-yellow chromatic aberration.

It's a challenging environment to begin with with how dark it is and how fast and unpredictability some fish and other animals move. The best - still pretty bad - results I got were at f/4, 1/300 or faster and moderate ISO speeds.

Part of the issue is that, with my username being very literal, I can't really adjust my settings in response to image quality, on the spot. Reviewing images in the EVF with magnification is awesome and helpful, but I still end up getting disappointed when I open the photos up on my 32 inch monitor...

So... any tips? Is there a secret for this, something like a Watery 16 rule I don't know about?

For what it's worth, one of these places is pretty close by. I could get an annual pass and head there every weekend and try something new. I don't want to, but I could. Hehe.

Came across a collection of starfish at Cates Park this morning due to low tide. I've never seen them up close like this before, very alien looking.

Photo of a sea lion enjoying the sun on a dock in the marina at Cowichan Bay, Vancouver Island.

Sea lions visit Cowichan Bay in the fall to feast on salmon on their way to migrate upstream. It is early in the season, many more sea lions will arrive this month. Read more here.

Really liked the shapes that the negative space of the fog took here. Calm and simple.
