I'm not a fan of being pickpocketed myself, but do you know what I'm also not a big fan of? That such technology will be very effective combating minorities who already have the entire system working against them, because their crimes are more likely to happen in the public spheres, but will be terrible against rich people who have their legions of lawyers, tech engineers, IT speciailists who could build a Great Wall to prevent their criminal activities from being exposed.

Right now, a homeless man would be arrested for simply sleeping on the benches in the parks, a transgender woman/man wouldbe dragged out from the public restrooms because they...need to finish their business? And you will see clowns such as Trump who is a criminal their entire lives but just are recently investigated and prosecuted, and what does it take to drag them out to the justice? How about legions of capitalists who outsource menial labor to Third world countries and treat workers there like dirt, while keeping family friendly facade to their homeland's public? That's crime against humanity itself, and what the authrority do about it? A slap in the wrist?

You really believe that mass surveilance will affect everyone equally? They will catch the most urgent crimes?

And what do you mean that wealth distribution will not actually help those in need? What would then?

But why would you trust the government, companies or any third party to have the authority to own this technology to fight crime? Because just as easily it helps them to detect minor to serious crimes in public spaces, it could very well be implemented to detect and surveil government's dissidents, hardcore activists (yes, I'm talking about antifa), or revolutionaries for that matter.

Furthermore, crimes are generally committed not because people who do it like it, but often time because of sheer desperation. Shoplifters, pickpockets, sex workers or other petty law breakers are disproportionately poor, and poor people are disproportionately not white, do we really want to harden the iron fist of the government by allowing them to use mass surveillance techonology which is classist and racist, not by intentional design, but by its very neccessity? What good such thing would do by throwing poor people into prisons, in which they will literally do free slave labor for the profit of prison industrial complex?

Not to mention that in the current political climate, the existence of people in the marginalized gender and sexuality minorities are in danger, and the poor treatment towards such groups has been made legitimate by law. Would you really want bigoted authority to regconize their identity in the public by using this technology?

Why don't we just prevent crimes by, I don't know, redistributing wealth, dismantling racism, sexism, or overthrowing the current social system to build a better world in which there's neither neccessity nor incentives to commit crimes in the first place?

Please regconize that just because the implementation of such techonology do not affect you personally, it will not disproportionately affect the most vulnerable groups in the society.

Haha, it's my main qualm with my own art too

I'm reading Social Reproduction Theory and Perrido Street Station. I like the former a lot, but the latter is incredibly dense, not in the sense that the proses are impenetrable or the vocabulary needed to read is overwhelming, but I just can't power through the book's long winded passages to set up the world building. I hate that I have to consult the map very closely to even follow what the hell he's talking about. I read the book for a good hour or two and haven't seen anything notciable happening, because the author is taking his sweet time to meticulously describe everything, before the tension, I guess.

But eh, it's really just the matter of taste. Many people love his style of writing, and honestly I could see that, somehow. As for me, I will stick around with this book for a bit longer to see if my patience pays off.

Sorry because this turns out to be a rant.
