I actually find this a huge problem. Not all distros are built around LSB, XDG, or FreeDesktop.org nor should they be since not everyone is running Linux as a workstation/PC replacement. While yes for the most part podman can be ran on the likes of Gentoo, Alpine, Arch and etc. It becomes a pain in the arse to decouple the tooling for podman away from freedesktop.org standards. Even more a pain in the arse for clustering options (e.g. podman-remote expects freedesktop.org norms, kubernetes expects docker containerd or freedesktop.org with podman, and nomad stack is just bulky vaporware).

The really sad part of this is that podman isn't adding much of anything new that LXC or linux namespaces outside of not needing a daemon, allowing rootless execution (again because it doesn't need a daemon) and giving ACLs around which OCI repos could be pulled from unlike docker's wildcard by default. It shouldn't be hard to do linux containerization without being tied to anything other than the linux kernel.

It can be, but the forums and wiki is full of examples and documentation. One can also easily download the VMware image or buy a few hAP ac lites off ebay for the price of a pizza. Not saying the structured approach of an online course is not valuable just its rather easy to dive into these devices with one's own at home lab. Plus out of the box there is not a lot of heavy customization one needs to do to the configuration like one would with Cisco products.

allowed to talk about Lemmy on Reddit

if /r/lemmy is any proof; A) its ok to talk about lemmy on reddit and B) /u/spez has some validity in his point about users would be back not just because of the '48hr' thing.

That said, yes a loud enough minority can create change and that discussion does need to happen where the users are for the network effect to kick off.

About the same as a Lynx or Netscape/Mozilla only web. Just in this age, a very advertizer heavy.

What's going to be more concerning is the forced adoption of ML based language models pre deciding how we speak, think, and search. Via echo chambers of bottom line revenue driven models with reinforcement from lowest common denominator of thought data points used in autocorrect, autosuggest, and bard/chatgpt powered search results which one cannot disable or use alternatives.

Think 1984 meets Idiocracy but modernia is the religion of everyone.

The worst part is this is already happening. Type in 'Modernia' into google to search and it autocorrects to modern, denies the word, or shows a fictional character. Instead of showing results about the plight of modern consumerism, corporate america, and other post modern issues afflicting the society of the current age.

TLDR; Point being here invest in the drink you want not the tools to make it.

Honestly there is a lot of coffee snobs out there making way too much money off selling us on the 5-600 or 1.5-3K model machines which only matter if your running an actual cafe that needs to serve 20 people in ten minutes. The biggest thing to consider is bars of pressure, maintenance, and basket size. Average models would do 15 to 20 bars of pressure [usually more than enough for all kinds of drink types] and hold around 14 to 16g of espresso in a 58mm basket.

So with that in mind. Here's my journey.

  • Started with something similar to an IMUSA USA GAU-18202 4 Cup Espresso/Cappuccino Maker ($35 on amazon, or $20 at Walmat in the early 00's). This lasted about 8 years of heavy use [e.g. 3 to 4 servings a day]
  • After my old machine's plastic bits on the handle and the steamer completely destroyed I shopped around and got a 20 Bar Braville similar to amazon.com/dp/B0C68T5Z2C. Still works great and gets twice the usage without any failure to produce great coffee.
  • Instead of investing into coffee machines I put that into the quality of the roast and grinders.
  • First thing was instead of buying pre-ground coffee which easily has at least 18 months on the shelf before you get it home. I got my own roaster and cooler [amazon.com/dp/B07Q3KZ5G6 and amazon.com/dp/B07S9XYC48] then explored several types of green beans. Found the flavor profiles that work best for a cafe quality city roast is from Smoking beans [amazon.com/dp/B00LSSAGPW]. Honestly Smoking beans is a great producer. Loved thier honduras sourced mexican blend [amazon.com/dp/B00LSSAOG8] mixed with sumatran or blue mountain. Made for a really clean and smooth expresso that complimented nearly every kind of drink I made. Best part is one 5lb bag lasts around two months at about 3 to 4 shots a day with a self tailored flavor profile for the price of two weeks supply of Cafe Bustelo or Medaglia D'Oro.
  • As for grinder I went with a Mr Coffee Electric Burr Coffee Grinder just for its flexibility but recently upgraded to Sozen hand grinder [amazon.com/dp/B07HMTFRXC] to get actual fine powered coffee and its worth it too. That fine of a ground really pulls out all the great flavors and more caffeine than anything else out there. Plus its super quick too, the amount of time it takes for my machine to heat up I would have already ground 2.5 pulls worth of espresso meaning I'd have 40g of espresso ready for use long before my first pull and another doppio with a ristretto ready by the time I've pulled one more.

Where I'm going from here; might try a manual lever espresso (e.g Flair NEO) but since these get 9 bars of pressure instead of the usual 15 bars for cafe quality (starbucks goes for 19 bars in their machines) I'm going to wait for someone to gift it or it comes down to the $30 range on ebay. Also been doing a lot of turkish coffee which is really inspiring. The hand grinder allows me to add aromatics directly into the grind (like chicory, dried citrus peels, allspice, and/or cardamon pods) so I get a very fresh flavor added to the profile right before a pull. Even been following the trend in professional competitions to copy "drinkologists" with adding cocktail techniques into thier espresso which surprising does work to really add a bit more to the drink.

Yep and boiled cow tongue is really great as a cold cut for long lasting meals. Even potted meat is a great option too [17th century recipe I mean, not that over salted lunch meat in a tiny can].

Look into Indian foods and even traditional japanese. Really hearty and nutrient dense foods there. Plus there's a book on Depression era cooking that has a lot of great recipes for low cost and self sustaining.

2600 made the move. We're sticking around.

But for professional stuff I'll be spinning up my own instance and building out a massive cross link program since search engines still would favor large sites like reddit, SO, medium and the like just on thier IPs being highly trusted for indexing.

Glad to help. Lets keep it rolling. Feel free to post here about anything 2600 related. Phonebooths/phones are cool and so is infosec/privacy news. Oh and meetups are welcome to post as well.

Get the latest issue out now.

Little trivia for you (Moderator Denzuko is 40 years old this year too).

In this howto we'll show you how one can join lemmy.world or any Fedirated lemmy instance so they can free themselves from the evils of reddit's CEO:

  1. Go to https://join-lemmy.org

  2. Click Join a Server

  3. Pick one you like the domain / url for and click it

  4. Sign up with your email of choice. use a +2600@<email.host> to help find notifications later on.

Congrats, you have joined lemmy. From your home instances, you can click on the Communities link and see all the communities on that instance, and subscribe to them so they show up on your subbed feed. If you don’t see a community you want, you can create one. In the most basic form, that’s it, you are now part of Lemmy.

From here You can log into your instance and then subscribe to communities from other instances. To do that, once you log in to your preferred instance:

  • Search for !community-name@instance-name (like [email protected])
  • Click the link on the search result
  • Expand the sidebar
  • Click subscribe

Now, whenever you log in to your preferred instance you will see posts from the sub in your feed.

Have fun!

With all things in history there is usually a person of power whom abuses that power. In this case the CEO of reddit has taken a dump on its user base, and yes that is mildly an option but one shared by the over 38% of subreddits out there still dark at this time of writing.

This blackout while decisive and impactful. It was not a success and seeing the voting records on [/r/2600/(https://www.reddit.com/r/2600/comments/14an6wx/user_poll_go_federated_stay_dark_or_open_up/) to open back up] shows how decisive this issue is overall.

The numbers do not lie but it is quite clear there is bias behind the data. However because I am not a dictator only a supporter of 2600 Enterprises and the community of hackers here. One does recognize there is a desire to hold a presence within the Fediverse and open up the subreddit. With that we have our community here at lemmy.world/2600 and are looking into ways to mirror the r/2600 content via a bot and do encourage or members to use their favorite lemmy instance, matrix.io bridge, or fediverse client to continue the community have built up over the years over here as well. Secure in the knowledge that your voice is heard, the community is advert free, and you are respected as an individual.

Welcome to the Fediverse, Hackers!
