I can confirm that the email is only for sending out an invite, for downloading the beta version. You just use your existing MastoAPI-enabled Fediverse account.

Good to know. I have an inkling that this probably slipped under the radar when the SurfApp team were looking at branding and trademarks. Despite the fact that Suckless projects tend to have a somewhat popular following in the *nix community, it's probably pretty obscure anywhere else.

That’s not what this is. It’s more of a feed aggregator / reader with social features, framed as a browser of sorts.

The main thing it’s used for is feed curation and content discovery. You can basically use anything with a feed as a source, then aggregate and filter things.

It’s kind of like a news reader version of Yahoo Pipes almost.

Kind of. It doesn't do everything, but it could be a killer app for custom feeds and discovery in the Fediverse. It's still in Beta, and feels a little underdeveloped, but it's a promising proof-of-concept.

[sorry, a Lemmy bug made me reply to the wrong comment]

Today, we dig into the nitty-gritty of Surf, a new app by Flipboard. We document what it is, how it works, and areas where the experience could be improved.

That's honestly hilarious, fuck Minds.com. Place is literally Gab Lite.

Lukewarm take at best. It's cool if it's not for you personally, but a lot of people use it, love it, and benefit from it.

I think the stuff that Loops is building out could eventually become a standard feature that a lot of Fediverse platforms optionally offer. That kind of interop for the people that want it is frankly a win.

They were for a while, but I think the process has opened up a bit?

You might want to try CapCut. It's by ByteDance, used by a lot of Tiktokers, and some of the better features are behind a paywall, but it's probably one of the brightest examples of an easy-to-use mobile editor for Android.

I still haven't found a whole lot of alternatives to that. There's some professional-grade multi-track editors, and some rinkydink open source apps that barely do anything. Honestly, it's kind of hard to find a good balance.

For those interested in trying out #Loops, you may be wondering: what are good tools or processes for making videos?

We go into detail with some of the tools we're currently using.

Meta's microblogging platform and X rival, Threads, has taken another step closer to two-way connectivity to the Fediverse.

Object Storage is relatively cheap, and goes a long way towards affordable hosting. Processing video, on the other hand...

Loops aims to be an open Fediverse alternative to TikTok, Snapchat, and Vine. We take an early look at the app, and talk about what it's like!

To be fair, it kind of bubbled up gradually over the course of several years. 😅 It did not happen all at once!

Hey, thanks for asking! It largely boils down to money, people, and time. I'm currently a full-time student, and struggling to stay afloat.

Here's all the things I currently do:

  • Research / Testing (gathering info for stories, tracking down info for sources, testing apps and platforms)
  • Writing articles, interviews, guides, and reviews.
  • Content Editing pieces submitted by contributors
  • Scheduling for Podcast interviews
  • A/V Production
  • Podcast Distribution
  • Music Promotion
  • Graphic Design (thumbnails and such)
  • WordPress development (features and data)
  • Social Media Management (11+ accounts)
  • Instance moderation
  • Event coverage
  • Manage a Contributor Team
  • Fundraising
  • System Administration

I'm probably missing a few things. It's a lot! And, while I've been able to balance this out for a long time, my severe burnout has seen diminishing returns. I'm at a point where articles are getting finished days and even weeks after something has happened, which... isn't great.

All of this stuff is more or less being done for pennies an hour. It's not sustainable.

Earlier this month, the Mastodon project announced a new initiative funded by NGI Search: Fediverse Discovery Providers! The goal is to build a resource framework for different kinds of services that can work with potentially any instance or platform.

Evan Prodromou, the creator of StatusNet, the OStatus protocol, and co-author of ActivityPub, is launching a dedicated nonprofit for the purpose of advocating for and supporting the Fediverse.

In a guest article co-written by Heidi Li Feldman and Tim Chambers, the case is made in favor of political organizing in the Fediverse, rather than through corporate social media.

Both authors bring up case studies in their experience in grassroots fundraising and advocacy for the Harris-Walz presidential campaign through Mastodon and Bluesky.

For Fediverse musicians looking for a new Bandcamp alternative, Bandwagon feels extremely promising. It's built on top of the Emissary platform, and offers a robust amount of features for playing, promoting, and discovering music.

sub.club is an emergent new platform for paid subscriptions in the #Fediverse. It's simple, smooth, and easy to use.

In the development and building of a shared, open, collaborative network, efforts have come and gone over the years for the Fediverse. We dig into the history, various attempts, and some of the ideas people have had.

As the Fediverse continues to grow, people are looking to build new experiences that change what's possible on the network today.

Flohmarkt is a nascent project intended for selling personal items, and may be the first attempt of its kind here.

Flipboard continues its rollout of federation capabilities, this time implementing a “soft-follow” system for users to try out federated subscription for the very first time.
