All the so called uplifting news here seems like backhanded depressing news, really.

It will hit zero when there are no trees left

That's too bad. Looks like we're going to have to pump up those numbers to make up for it. /s

All of the doom and gloom around this news is depressing. Yes, deforestation is still occurring and that is bad. But it isn't like all of this is going to flip on a dime. I don't think it's useful or healthy to, as to say, let perfection be the enemy of progress. I think we should celebrate that the efforts being made to stop deforestation obviously are working and we should be full steam ahead.

As a Brazilian, this is a much needed breather. Unfortunately, deforestation is a chronic plague that govts with common sense try to fight. But when you have a fucking criminal, trump-loving mutt bitch that slashes the funding for the govt agency that exists solely to fight that, rebuilding takes time. It will take at least another year or two to even begin filling up vacant job spots in the agencies and local (state, city) police forces are more likely to be in on environmental illegalities than investigating them.

The state of Mato Grosso saw a record deforestation this year, seemingly because most of the attention was aimed at Amazon and Pará, where many, many, MANY illegal strip miners set up shop during the bozo years and where "the fight" went. While bozo whined to no end that it was "wrong" when IBAMA (the agency that enforces environmental policies) blew up apprehended equipment, Lula gave the greenlight to blow up every dredge, tractor, excavator, generator and boat used by the criminals.

Shit here is fucking tense, but there's hope that it can get better, if only slightly.
