Yes you can block communities. It will depend on what user interface you're using, but it's absolutely possible.

If your post meets the following criteria, it's welcome here!
- Open-ended question
- Not offensive: at this point, we do not have the bandwidth to moderate overtly political discussions. Assume best intent and be excellent to each other.
- Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, see the list of support communities and tools for finding communities below
- Not ad nauseam inducing: please make sure it is a question that would be new to most members
- An actual topic of discussion

For clarity on the user interface in question, this is specifically for the web UI provided by lemmy.ml / lemmy.world by default.
I can go into the community directly to block, but I would prefer to just have a button to block the community from the "all" page without having to subject myself to more content from that community.
Every post has the community hotlinked. Click on the community, the sidebar on the right has a big red block button.
There's no button on the feed, and honestly I wouldn't really want that. Accidentally blocking an entire community with a misclick would be extremely annoying. But design preferences aside, if you want to block the community you'll have to brave their front-page long enough to click the button.
Got it, bummer I have to open the community, but thanks for the info!
I blocked one of the nsfw comms from my All feed, at least on Jerboa. I think it was in the "more" button.
edit: on desktop it seems the easiest way is to go to the community and select "block community" from the sidebar. At least for me.
There's a "block community" button in the sidebar.
In the website you can access your account and block any community or user you want
It's a bit cumbersome as you have to enter the offending slice and then click "ignore community" in the sidebar.
I wish there was a more convenient way.
In related news this mostly affected me before i switched my standard view to "subscribed" instead of "local".
