Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • These rules are somewhat loosened when the subject is a public figure. Still, do not attack their person or incite harrassment.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn. Even if you watch it on a Linux machine.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

The grub thing got me, but I just switched to systemd boot and moved on. I got to learn about bootloader's, so that was fun!

My Arch installation does break sometimes. I literally had a year-long issue where it turned out my old network card was incompatible with the kernel and the consequence was that a kernel panic would randomly come up almost daily without any kind of warning or error trace. Package updates sometimes do make my system unbootable, too.

However! That's very much what I was expecting when I chose Arch. If I didn't have the tech expertise/patience to deal with those issues, I wouldn't have chosen it in the first place. What I like about Arch is that I feel like everything is under my control and no problem comes out of nowhere. Except, maybe, I kinda don't like having to interact with the NVIDIA driver bullshit.

I replaced the network card and the kernel panics were gone. Whenever a package breaks my system I just downgrade it. It doesn't work flawlessly, but unlike Windows or Ubuntu, it's not actively fighting against me. I overall don't regret it. It's been my daily driver for 2.5 years now.

Is it just me who chuckles when all the peeps here confirm the meme by their "BuT Me ArCh NeVeR bRoKe" posts all super serious and not at all a little butthurt? <Insert trollface>

I used to run arch but then went back to Ubuntu. Arch is a good operating system. Don't get me wrong. My system has been borked a few times because of arch maintainers and not my own actions.

I used to run into updates breaking dependencies, like Gimp not working after an update and such but since switching most my programs to be Flatpaks I had very few issues.

You must state what system you run to get this experience... Are you a 'buntu user?

    extra/gimp 2.10.34-1 (20.3 MiB 113.4 MiB) (Installed)

    • NOT a single issue with this package since I installed GIMP via pacman some 6 years ago.

I have no reason to install the bloated flatpak version.

    No reason at all.

Arch, it's not that uncommon for a pacman update to bork some application. Such is the nature of rolling release. Not saying it's super common, but in my years using Arch it happened more times than I would have liked.

Maybe time to move up to Manjaro ;) 6 years it never happened to me. With KDE the last year or so, we had some extensive delays before it stabilised enough to be considered stable.

Yeahhh, I really don't need bleeding edge software on my daily driver box. If you enjoy doing post mortems on logs, more power to you, I have things to do.
