MODERATORS

Hello everyone! These past 2 weeks have been quite something, haven't they? Whether you're here to escape Reddit's fallout or have already been part of the Lemmyverse for years, welcome!

First of all, to answer the most pressing question:

  • dormi.zone is here to stay.

I myself am a big fan of the fediverse, and I believe it has been yearning for more laser-focused communities like this one. I'm proud of how many people this community has attracted so far, and as the premier location for discussion around Warframe ~and~ ~Soulframe~ on the fediverse, dormi.zone will stay open for the forseeable future.

However, since the r/Warframe subreddit is also back open and in full operation with its more than 600k subscribers, most admins/moderators have returned there for their moderation duties. I will remain here as the head admin and I'm determined to make dormi.zone the best it can be.

Here's what's to come for the Warframe community on dormi.zone:

Simpler rules

dormi.zone started out with an exact copy of r/Warframe's ruleset, which was carefully crafted and iterated on over multiple years, thanks to a team of dedicated people. The reality is that in dormi.zone's current state, some of those rules are simply not needed. You can expect rules like the Expired Event Rule ("Event posts are removed after the event (alert, invasion, etc.) is over.") to disappear and others to be simplified, which should also make the sidebar a tiny bit more compact.

Theme updates

You might have already noticed that dormi.zone looks a bit different than other Lemmy instances. Mainly because I felt like it, I had haphazardly created a custom theme to mimic our r/Warframe design, which even adapts to the community you're currently on! ~Don't~ ~look~ ~at~ ~the~ ~size~ ~of~ ~the~ ~CSS~ ~file~ ~this~ ~site~ ~has~ ~downloaded.~

There are still some rough edges that will be polished in time. Future versions of Lemmy should make this much easier.

Weekly Posts

Lemmy does not come with an AutoModerator. I'll have to make one myself to make moderating easier, and when I do, I might as well use it for some interesting weekly sticky posts. Instead of copying over the weekly threads of r/Warframe, I'll be experimenting with new ones, with some of the potential ideas being:

  • a Weekly Reset thread that announces which loot this week has in store: Archon shards, Nightwave acts, Incarnon Genesis Adapters, and whether Teshin is carrying an Umbra Forma this week. (He has one this week btw)
  • a Weekly Discussion thread centered around a randomly chosen Warframe.
  • a Weekly Feedback thread that lets you exchange and discuss opinions, feedback and suggestions for a randomly chosen game mechanic.

Let me know about any other threads you'd like to see!

Knowledge Collection

A big reason why we reopened r/Warframe was because many people value it not only as a place for discussion, but also as a repository of knowledge and game information. This might have become increasingly obvious for anyone who searched for a resource map, a fishing guide, or that one modding infographic they've been missing in the last 2 weeks.

I might approach some creators of educational content and ask for their permission to repost their content on dormi.zone. I will always make sure to credit them and link to their original post and their socials.

If you want to help out, feel free to do the same thing yourself! Whenever you see some great guide anywhere else on the internet, you may add a copy of it to this community, with the original creator's permission and with appropriate credit. Really, those people deserve it.

Ways to support dormi.zone

I want to be fully transparent about this. dormi.zone is currently going to cost me around $12.50/month for the server and $30/year for the domain, adding up to $180/year. I'm prepared to pay for this myself, but if anyone would like to support me in the future, I would appreciate it greatly.

I've been brainstorming ideas on how to reward supporters of dormi.zone, with the leading idea currently being a special sponsor user flair for a very low monthly commitment. People from other instances won't see those though, which does diminish their value. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

I can't give you a timeframe for any of these topics, because I don't have one. With a lot of IRL stuff on my plate, things might move slowly on dormi.zone, but I assure you they will move.

Thank you for your attention, and for being a part of this community! I'm curious to know your thoughts.

Awesome, thanks for the update. This has been my go-to play for my Warframe obsession now as apposed to else where, so thanks for keeping it up and yeah in time it'll find it's groove!

I'm really trying to make lemmy my go to now that I have the instance up so please keep it up.

Glad to see dormi.zone is here to stay! Good to have another place to discuss Warframe on, away from the white alien site. Weekly Reset thread sound like an awesome idea, I always forget when Teshin brings his Umbra Forma back (thanks for reminding me to grab it this week!) As for new thread ideas, maybe something like Grinding Tips thread (weekly might be too often though, maybe every new patch?) where people can discuss drop locations, tips and speed-ups for whatever the newest grind is. Might be a good place for people to find info without having to scour through wiki pages and video guides.

Thanks, I'll keep this in mind!

Glad to hear it's gonna hang around. I think we should periodically try to attract new users, whether it's casually mentioning dormizone if you live in reddit and here, or some other method.

Is there a donation flow available yet? Don't really care about flair, but do want to support the community I've come to love. Appreciate all the work you've been putting in!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

+1 don't care about flair (specifically don't care about recognition at all at this point)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Not yet, look out for updates on the dormi.zone meta community!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Great to hear this will keep going, since im more than inclined to stay.

By the way, probably not the best place to ask but since maintenance costs were mentioned I want to know does it make a difference to make a Post Uploading Content straight into Dormi.zone in comparison to lets say Imgur and embedding it in the post? Which would be better for not generating costs to y'all?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I'm personally torn on this.

As the admin who pays for the storage, I'd tell you to please upload as much externally as you can. But I also understand that this can cause problems in the long term when those external providers shut down or start deleting images en masse (looking at you, Imgur), leaving many posts without context.

Uploading game screenshots on dormi.zone should be fine for the most part, but please upload larger content like videos on external services instead.

This is great to see. I don't plan on going back to reddit.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Your contributions and effort to the Lemmy Warframe instance is much appreciated, thank you!

[–] Hotdogman 4 points 1 year ago

Much appreciated for your selfless work. Thank you.

It's a small boat over here and I like it. I'm not going back to that other place that shall not be named. Keep up the good work and toss updates on the front page. I'll sit over here and sip my coffee.

I don’t find this at all a lesser place than /r/warframe. Happy to be here.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's reassuring to hear! I know we're not as big as r/warframe but on the other hand - we don't have to be, as long as it feels lively and comfortable here. We also don't have to aggressively market it on the subreddit, just keep being active here and create content - eventually more people might join. Reddit is only going to get worse, especially after July, so I think more people will look for alternatives and be happy to find an established nice community here.

The only thing I'm a bit sad about is that this is a lemmy and not a kbin instance but I know there are some issues with deploying and maintaining kbin since it's in an earlier development stage. On kbin each community (magazine) has a second tab called "microblog" which is like a filtered twitter feed connected to the rest of the fediverse. For example, on the guild wars 2 kbin instance it works pretty well as a place for people to create small posts or interact with them when a whole new thread would be too much.

And yeah technically warframe has it too if you access it through kbin (https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]) but I feel like most people here don't know about it cuz it's kinda dead ^^

In any case, I'd love for this community to grow and thrive, I'm excited about the fediverse and would love to get away from reddit as much as possible.

Choosing between Lemmy and kbin was tough. In the end it seemed like Lemmy would make for a much nicer administration experience.

Here's a comment by the instance admin of lemmy.one explaining their choice (which influenced my decision as well): https://www.reddit.com/r/PrivacyGuides/comments/13zo1cf/reddit_apis_apps_and_rprivacyguides_blackout/jmwpic2/

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Understandable, kbin does seem much earlier in the development compared to lemmy. Ernest, the main dev, has been very active and has gotten a lot of help recently so it will probably/hopefully pick up the pace.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

It has been a bit slow with not many people posting, but I'll keep coming back since I stopped using Reddit. Also visiting warframe forums but not used to the format after using reddit for so long.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Props to you for putting so much work in!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm happy this is staying. My navigation experience has been way better here than on Reddit.

Question, is it ok to re-post here some useful stuff posted on Reddit by other people?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Yes! Quoting my post above:

Whenever you see some great guide anywhere else on the internet, you may add a copy of it to this community, with the original creator’s permission and with appropriate credit. Really, those people deserve it.

@HKayn Even though I didn't play warframe lately (last time was before Graphical update and Drifters) due my pc being broken and even if repaired old pc won't work with new graphic upgrade. I am still proud of fellow Tenno who organized this instance and gave new place for people who will leave the ship for new ventures.

After giving it some thought since the announcement to re-open the sub, I arrived at the conclusion that I do not want to be a part of this community anymore, both on Reddit and Lemmy. This will be my last post here and I won't see any replies but feel free to discuss anyway. Don't worry, I won't let the door hit me on my way out, but before they load and open (sad Volt main noises) I'd like to explain why.

I initially didn't care about Reddit blackout because I was using the official app, thinking the API changes won't affect me, but since my favourite subreddit decided to join, I did some reading on it and I see why people decided to do the blackout. In order to support everyone participating, including r/Warframe, I also deleted my 7 year old Reddit account with over 200k Karma through the Redacted.

While the people in the Warframe community both here and on Reddit are generally very nice, helpful, and I honestly like interacting with you, I do not want to support a community run by people who bailed on the blackout. I'm not interested in making my own community either because further splintering, albeit miniscule, doesn't benefit anyone.

I've read your reasoning for reopening but don't agree with them. To me, they are excuses we as a community could work around and resolve but you decided to take the easy way out instead of working with us. We could go into the discussion about this in length but it wouldn't change anything because the decisions have already been made and I've no interest in trying to change your mind as much as you don't care about changing mine.

Switching to Solo Mode.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I'm sorry to hear that. I'd like to know what makes you feel this way.

  • Why does our reasoning come across as excuses?
  • Who is "we as a community"? The Warframe community is vast, so working with the entire community is all about making compromises.
  • What would have been a more satisfying resolution for you, and how could we have achieved it?
