Hello! Greetings from the USA. Thank you for selfhosting an instance with transparency and a no defederation policy. I am a refugee from vlemmy.net, which promised similar virtues and then lost their domain and went silent. I can see from your ethos this is a great instance to be in, as you actually explain how you are hosting this server. That is the true importance of an open source federated platform.

This place is for all things Lemdit.
Hey, welcome to Lemdit! I'm glad you share the same values. I'm also surprised to learn about vlemmy, up until your post I was oblivious that something happened to them. Truly strange and a shame if they're gone for good, they were the only larger instance that promised similar virtues, as you say. I'll be curious to see how this develops.
Fair and well said. Thanks for hosting, cheers!
Clear, concise, and not out to defederate everyone that you don't agree with. I like it already.
Thanks, I'm glad it resonates with you!
Changes made:
- Added the server rules (previously displayed on the home page sidebar)
- Changed the order of topics
Changes made:
- Took out "We will not defederate! We are not currently blocking anyone, nor do we want to be." since we've meanwhile defederated burggit.moe due to legal concerns. Our intent remains unchanged, but this bit is no longer technically correct.
I'm curious if there are certain behaviours that should be done sparingly to be a good steward of your hosting - e.g. does it eat up a lot of HDD space if I subscribe to many communities outside of this instance?
The gif I posted in the other comment is only 1 second and is ~1/10th of an MB, is that content now going to sit on your drive taking up space forever?
Thanks for your concern!
Yes anything you post is going to sit on my drive taking up space forever* (*well at least until it gets deleted, but then the image won't be visible anymore).
Since we're self hosted, we're not as constrained as some of the folks that use cloud services to power their instances (VPS lower tiers usually offer very little in the way of storage space, likely under 100GB, sometimes as little as 25GB).
Obviously the server doesn't have unlimitted space, at the moment I have 1TB allocated to the Lemdit VM, but this can be expanded reasonably easy. Right now the DB + Pictures take up ~1.3Gb total so it will take a long time to reach that ceiling at the current rate.
This may change if we get a large influx of people joining, but we'll worry about that if and when the time comes. In the meantime please feel free to subscribe to as many communities and post as many images as you want!
Awesome! Thanks again for putting so many resources towards this instance!
