Some background on Bending Spoons: Their business model is to buy struggling companies with a bigger userbase, that have financial problems and then they are laying off most of the devs and try to take out as much money as possible by making the product as horrible as possible. They did it with evernote, they did it with WeTransfer, they did it with Meetup and they totally will do it with Komoot

Welcome!
Right when everyone is recommending them as an alternative to Strava, is this acquisition the reason you now need a subscription to transfer maps to devices?
That's an odd recommendation in my book. I use both and I couldn't imagine using one instead of the other. To me, one is a route planner and the other is athletes' Facebook.
I agree and like you wasn't really sure why but I have seen a lot of people recently recommend komoot as an alternative to Strava, particularly on the buyeuropean communities. I haven't used Komoot for quite a few years now though so didn't know if maybe they had expanded into activity tracking as well as routes etc.
I hate this. Why did I wake up to these news.
Welcome to today's world.
For alternatives, there's Wikiloc: https://www.wikiloc.com/
And perhaps GeoVelo: https://geovelo.app/en/
Fuck, i love komoot!
Me too. I actually paid for it as it was so great for route planning.
Everything gets bought up and chewed out. I’d love to see an open sourced version that anyone can use, similar to lemmy various front end clients.
I just installed komoot... Lol I'm cursed
