... directed the Food and Drug Administration to eliminate a loophole in safety rules that allows food corporations to self-affirm that all of their ingredients are safe without providing data to the agency, a key step in his “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.

I agree with the idea of this. Am I hallucinating or is there actually something sane coming out of this whole mess? AFICT JFK Jr. is a complete nutbar, so I am skeptical but ...

I do have one complaint, but not necessarily with the idea rather than the implementation.

Why is the FDA requiring proof from a corporation that an ingredient is safe rather than the Agency providing proof to the company that the ingredient is safe and allowed to be used?

Are there that many ingredients that random companies are using which the FDA has never looked into the safety for?

Good point. Doesn't the FDA also consider any chemical/drug legal until ruled illegal as well?

Seems it would be safer to require something be declared legal first, before it can be marketed willy-nilly (food, medicine or drugs).

Yes! And thank you for actually reading it and not just disregarding it because it's happening under Trump admin or RFK Jr. as most of Lemmy has been doing lately.

Lemmy needs to remember that liberals hate ultraprocessed foods too. Just because republicans are hating it and working on it, doesn't mean Lemmy needs to suddenly like ultraprocessed crap!

It's bad, regardless of administration, guys.

the man is insane and dangerous and will likely be responsible for mass death due to negligence, but the stopped clock rule still applies.

very few people of good conscience (and that includes a ton of lemmy users) will tear down objectively good policy. its the other, absolute batshit insanity that is objectionable.

Honestly as a parent with a kid that has life threatening food allergies I can't beleive a crazy man is actually making our lives easier...

...at least until we all die of a easily cured disease he kills funding for.

Agreed, I saw this posted in two conservative subs as well and one was negative while the other was still at one. I'm sorry if the bad guy is the one that wants this but this is a positive change. Especially with all the deregulation going on. I guess such a disjointed administration can't help but fuck up rightly occasionally.

Yep! My question: why did it take so long for this change to happen? Under any administrations...

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

I'll take this small win. Hopefully Trump and Elon don't fuck it up somehow.

Why do I feel like this is there to fuck over vegan brands specifically because they love to cancel shit over being called mayonnaise even tho it doesn’t have egg or fucking whatever. So I’m sure they’ll dude it to pull shit like that on whatever they deem woke.

It’s a generally good change, but that doesn’t mean I trust it’s for a good reason.

the devil in the (implementation) details. we need more info and this is very preliminary, but I am guardedly hopeful that at least one thing this dude does might be beneficial.
