This guy does some nice mods and the videos cover a lot of the car dissected. Great intro montages.

Awesome ! Cool video . I'm going to check out the rest of the series.

Picked up a 03 jetta TDi for my next project and I'm going the lifted/ all terrain tire route with a trailer to replace my truck. I can't justify the truck prices these days. My golf with roof rack has been doing everything I need as far as hauling lumber , water heaters etc and she's lowered!

I'm going to be doing injector upgrades and a tune as well so It will be a little rally car in a sense ( especially with the wild Hella lightbar i picked up ๐Ÿคฃ). Interior will be gutted behind the driver/ passenger seat for tool storage and my doggo .

Might do a build thread on here ๐Ÿค™

Perfect, lifted jetta with a trailer is going to make having a truck seem silly. Take lots of pictures and post them up. I have a lifted jetta too. Not a tdi though. Do you have a plan on the lift?

Yeah, I don't want to give it away, but as the videos go on the story gets pretty funny. I was laughing pretty good.

Yeah when my truck went tits up ( 2007 tacoma 4cyl 4x4) I was devastated. Wanted to drive it forever but finding that 2trfe 4cyl was impossible, truck was mint, sold it for 5k cash to some clowns that were going to run it through an auction. They probably made a few k , it ran on 3 cylinders ...I should have kept it and did an ALH swap I had an ALH wagon ready to donate but wasn't thinking right at the time โ˜น๏ธ

Had a 00 golf that needed a lot of work and already had a votex rack for some reason. Couldn't stop working so I redid all the running gear , timing belt , every sensor etc and it picked up the slack. Made me think what the hell is the point of a truck in this day and age.

Picked up the 03 jetta for $700 , needs a clutch ,timing belt and a few other goodies I already have laying around ( started hoarding ALH parts like I do with every other VW I've had) . I've always been an oil pan scraping , coilovers as low as possible savage and thought ๐Ÿค” this one is going up and will be my truck !

I'm going to use the jeep springs and shock/ strut extensions for the travel. I'm thinking this will be best for the increase in load with the trailer.

How did you lift yours ?

  • yeah the old guy seems like a character . He was happy about the loose change ...I would be too

Funny how VWs multiply. So many of us have a few around and a history of more. Like the guy in the video. 1 car, now its 2, then there are 3 cars,.....

My lift is vr6 springs with a spacer between spring top hat and bearing on the front struts, and in the back I found the heaviest stock springs at the junk yard and threw some urethane spacers under them. Then some 205/70r15 geolander A/Ts. It works out to 2-3 inches of lift. I get a smidge of rub on the back where the liner bumps out for the charcoal canister and LDP. I think past this I would be looking to do lift plates on the back hubs, which would also add some width. And up front I don't know. mk5 strut mounts with spacers, sub frame and engine mount spacers, tubular control arms with some extra reach. Maybe a modded subframe and rear swing arm.

For the trailer you might look at throwing some airbags in the back instead of springs, or some tow bags inside them. I have seen some heavy duty hitch installs also. Mounted off the rear bumper mounts instead of sheet metal like a curt.

Please make a matching trailer. That set up is so sweet. I always thought 2 golf asses together would be cool.

Yes I've got the "my other car is 10 VW's that don't run" bumper stickers ๐Ÿคฃ. It's a sickness

Yeah I'm going with hacked out fenders and ebay arches so tires won't be an issue. Going for the mad max look to troll all the brodozer crowd. She's murdered out , smoked headlights , turns , tint etc and her name is the "black panther". Might get a Huey Newton or Kwame Ture sticker for the rear window to really get em worked up.

I would like to build a golf trailer but I need something I can put a gangbox on and a rack for hauling 4x8 sheet lumber, laders etc. I'm thinking the harbor freight route unless something shows up on Craigslist.

So your running a ~27" . That's probably about as big as would go without turning it into a total pig.

Hmm tow bags ๐Ÿค”

... maximum bad assery might be a wagon trailer as a camper ๐Ÿคฏ. If I can find one with front end damage I'm going for it

Nice, I bet the junk yard has a bunch of fender extension options, and maybe even a car to test fit them on. I love the junk yard for the no risk try. I agree, if I went any bigger on the tires I would have some rub issues. Any higher and it starts looking obvious. I don't know if I would be adding more function either. I think doing a body lift from where I am at would be best. spacers between unibody and subframe, matching spacers at the trans and engine mounts to lower the engine and trans, same at top of struts, and plates in the back. This way the suspension can still function more correctly. Not end up with camber problems. Would help keep weight lower also. Maybe some camber plates on top of the struts and adjustment at the control arms would compensate though. More than one way to get it done.

wagon trailer is perfect.

I will post up some stuff on my jetta. I have a homemade rack on it that I use for ladders and couches and shit. The way VW did the factory rack mounts you can remove those points. I used them to bolt mine to the car. I have 2 versions. I have plans for a v3. I want to make it easier to move plywood sheets.

I spent years working out of my jetta. I loved the contrast with the truckbros. I worked a few high rise condo gigs and all the truck bros had to pull up and unload, have someone stay with all the gear on the sidewalk while driver goes off to find a spot, I was the only one with a vehicle that could fit in the buildings parking garage. It was privately gated so I knew no one was going to steal anything, and 30ft from the elevator. Ladders on the roof no problem. Oh, shit also fits in a garage no problem with shit on the roof. Best was that it cost me like 45 cents a mile to drive and the irs kicked back like 60 cents a mile, so I came out ahead every mile.

I think I'm going with the ridiculous ebay "jdm" universal fender flares. Saw a youtube video of a nice mk4 jetta lifted they seem to work well with a lifted mk4 and look good for the price. All our local yards got baught out by a large chain and the prices are unreal , it has to be something special for me to even go anymore โ˜น๏ธ

Clean build ๐Ÿ‘†

Interesting about the rack connection points. I figured they were modular but I haven't dug into them other than removing the cover. They are hard to come across in scrapyards in my area. There are some reseller hawks that hit the yards hard for VW/ Audi parts. I wish I knew how much they were going for when I would see them often ~10 years ago, they are such a well made piece, I would like a second set but not for $300 on ebay.

I get plywood with my harbor freight basket and some ratchet straps. I don't like cranking down on the oem crossbars too much but the basket eats the stress. Only put it on when I'm using it because I wind up getting about 40MPT better mileage with out it.

Worked commercial construction for 25 years , high-rise buildings were always fun jobs ! We could never use any of the "unused" parking garages, always had to park offsight and walk 5 blocks ...I guess we would have ruined them if we parked there ๐Ÿ™ƒ
