Explanation: Roman soldiers usually wore 'caligae', depicted on the right - hobnailed leather sandals. However, because of their ubiquity and usage, caligae are often translates as 'boots', such as the common translation of 'Caligula' as 'Little Boots'. Saying 'caligae are boots' or 'caligae are sandals' will almost always find you someone to contradict you with the opposite conclusion - there seems to be no winning on the issue!
